although there should be no need to AIV, the 944 is on "the list," they asked us for them in Colorado. We didn't have any, I just said "she's bone stock and on your list of approved cars" and we rolled on through. A 944 is a ball in that series

Yeah, that's my hope - keep it all stock and get by without the AIV. I will keep track of the cost, of course.

Definitely. Clear coat as is!

It's now washed off - but was that lichen on the RR quarter?

Look forward to more.

Take care!

Good luck! We found the 944 unfortunately isn't very competitive in Chump car, we ran one for a couple years and finally had to bail. Super reliable car, but not enough nuts down the straights. After a race where we ran flawlessly at Eagles Canyon and only finished 8th, we decided we had to make the move to a bmw if we wanted to run with the top guys. 9 out of 10 cars at the regional championship this year were BMWs. This year they are coming down on the cars with big motor swaps, so maybe that will help a little. Problem is the BMWs are too dang fast and everyone is moving towards them. A few years ago it was Miatas.

If anyone wants buy a built 944 chump car, ready to go, I have one for sale $4k. Located in Kansas City. She is ugly, but fresh motor 2 seasons ago, rod bearings every season. Doesn't need anything other than another round of rod bearings to be safe, a few body panels which we have, and a new owner.

Oh and crap can racing is some of the most fun you can have. Endurance racing with 4-5 of your buddies is an absolute riot. Heading to Texas on the 8th for an event, then 4-5 scheduled for next year, including new to us track watkins glen.

I race Chumpcars with a group in a 934S (started life as 924S but has a 944 fender and 944 lower shroud on it now due to getting T-boned at TWS earlier this year).

We got rid of the light buckets and the rear hatch (not to mention all door panels, interior, etc.) to lighten up the car. If you plan to do a 24 hour, you will want better lights than stock anyway (it is stupid hard to see anything even with 4 HID race lights and lots of people spin off by missing turns, etc.!!).

There was an article on Chumpcar about us fools that run 924s/944s because they always seem to blow up and you can't just drop by a FLAPS to pick up parts. on the other hand, by doing the math you could swap in a V8 and reduce the AIV on your car by doing so because motors, etc. are so much money.

Anyway, Good luck with the Chumpcar - lots of fun and while you may get blown away in the straights, many cars will not be able to stay with you in the turns and we frequently almost get hit from behind because these cars can stop on a dime (again, you can put in expensive brakes because they are so expensive to buy separately!).

Good luck!!

Good luck!!
Have you looked at the 2013 rules? Engine swaps will be hit pretty severely with penalties. A v8 swap is a minimum of a $5k conversion.

Sigh,

Guys, please read the rules.

No you do not need an AIV. The old list is different from the currently accepted $500 car list.

From the Chump car rule book. The 944 is on this list which I am not going to copy and paste, you can find the list on pages 52-54 of the rule book. It not the same list as before where you had cars that were accepted as $500 cars, cars that were borderline and would be looked at closely, etc.

ADDENDUM TO AIV RULES – EFFECTIVE 1 MAY 2012 – A TEAM MAY ELECT TO FOREGO THE COLLECTION AND PRESENTATION OF THE REQUIRED TEN (10) AIV ADS BY UTILIZING CHUMPCAR’S “BASIC $500 CAR RULE.” A basic $500 car is any car (limited to the year, make and/or model, if specified) listed on the “APPROVED BASIC $500 CAR LIST” ---- and the car is basically stock.
Here’s what we will allow and won’t allow:
1) You must add all the required safety items. You must remove all things related to safety... like glass, headlights, interior. You can modify certain things (very limited things) to install safety items.
2) You cannot add a fuel cell. Leave the stock fuel tank in-place. 3) You can upgrade brakes to the 2X rule (we don't care if the car goes... we do care about it being able to stop).
4) You can cut or heat the stock springs, but you cannot replace them with anything else... nor can you replace (or alter) the struts, shocks, sway-bar, bushings, etc. with anything other than exact OE equipment.
5) The engine, induction, cooling, oiling, ignition and all powertrain systems must remain stock.
6) Wheel size is open. Tires are subject to ChumpCar standard tire rules.
7) LIMITED removal of items include:
 Air conditioning system
 Power steering system
 Windscreen washer system
 Catalytic converter and exhaust system downstream of the collector; however the replacement exhaust pipe diameter must remain the same size as the stock pipe.
8) You cannot do anything else. You cannot remove or replace anything. Funky air cleaner? It stays. Small radiator? It stays. Smog crap? It stays. Bumpers and grill work. They stay. If your car came with some feature or part as part of the stock model… it stays.
Any other modifications to your car – ANY CHANGES WHATSOEVER – and we will NOT allow your car to be exempt from AIV documentation. That means if you show up without AIV documentation and you plan to slide-in using the “BASIC $500 CAR RULE,” but you changed the air filter type… or… put in just one nylon bushing anywhere on the car… or swapped out a different radiator… or removed any body panel… or structurally changed the car in any way… you’re toast! ChumpCar will determine your car’s value and you have to live with it (and it won’t be $500… I guarantee it!). This is the absolute “Showroom Stock” version of ChumpCar.

No - I have not. This was a discussion had last year over some beers after a race. The owner of the car threw the idea out there. Basically his gist was that because of how expensive Porsche parts are, you could get credit for selling stuff and pick up a "cheap" V8 to throw in. V8 Swaps into RX7s and other cars have been accepted before and think that is where his line of thinking was. Anyway, I am not up to speed on the new rules -- all I know is that the Chumpcar racing is a great deal of fun!!!

Thanks,

Ken
