Default Quick question about timing belts

I'm picking up a NA 86 944 today, and while it's in pristine condition with 86k miles, there's no documentation concerning the timing belt. The obvious thing to do is to replace it ASAP, but I'll be a few hours away at school until May and all I'll have is an apartment parking lot to work in,

Visually, the belt looks fine, you can still see the printing clearly and it looks pretty new. Is the belt something that breaks spontaneously, or will there be warning sign? (i.e. squeaking, vibrating, visual clues, etc). I really don't want to run the risk, but I would prefer to deal with it in May when I have access to my own garage with all my tools

Has it had the turbo belt guide upgrade? That's a tip that it has been replaced at least once. Do the records show a WP replacement?

The condition of the WP, rollers, and tensioners is key. At that mileage, the belt only may have been replaced. I'd do it once and do it right.

if the print is still pearly white...i'd think it's a new belt.

there's not a definitive warning sign. although splitting and hairline cracks are obvious indicators.

Look up ECS Tuning and find the 'Ultimate Plus' kit when you do. Worth every penny as it is complete, with a kevlar belt as well.
Make sure you replace all seals behind the cover, oil will destroy a belt very quickly!

You really know deep down that you should replace it if there are no records. There is no warning if it let's go and it can let go at anytime not just because the belt is worn, but for a variety of reasons: Worn rollers and guides, Old water pump, Front oil seal failure, etc.

Take it apart and check everything is in good shape, replace what sounds or feels bad, water pump just replace it. FOES check for leaks and replace if you see evidence.

It really is no fun paying for a head off rebuild (if you are lucky) or a replacement engine. Especially as yours has such low miles.
