First Oil Change Suggestions
I know I am opening a can a worms by asking this question (I have read all the archived posts), but I have yet to make a decision. I purchased a 1983 3 1/2 months ago, the car now has 82,000 original miles and it is time for my first oil change. The car was well taken care of, but I do not know whether or not the PO used synthetic, synthetic blend or non-synthetic oil.
I am going to use a Mahle filter, but I am not sure what type of oil. After reading the previous posts, I realize that I may develop oil leaks if I change to synthetic. I plan on religiously changing the oil every 3 to 4 months or 3,000 miles, so right now I am tending towards this frequency and using non-synthetic.
Any thoughts?
Also, any suggestions for a non-synthetic oil (I will heed the warnings about Penzoil)?
Any suggested weights for a NY daily driver? -

I also live in the fabulous New York climate. (really fabulous if you go to FL during these winters) Anyway, I have been told for NY, we should use 20W-50 for the summer and 10W-40 for the winter. My mechanic recently told me to use that weight of oil.
Any feedback from others.
P.S., I just changed my oil 2 weeks ago using non-synthetic 20W-50.

This is what I use - this is FYI ONLY
20w-50 Castrol GTX (read the fine print - good for turbos). Dino oil is cheaper, less prone to leak with older seals, and results are just as good overall. If you keep to a rigourous schedule with oil changing you will be fine.

I am currently running 10W40 dino oil. Brumos Porsche put it in at the 75K svc. I do plan on switching to full syn. at my next change though. I had all of the front/rear seals and the oil pan gasket changed at the 75K svc so I am not that concerned about leaks. My '89 Carrera never leaked because I ran synthetic.
What I like better about synthetic is the fact that oil pressure seems to stablilize more quickly, less effected by temperature changes. It comes up into the normal range even with a cold engine and stays there. At least it always did with my previous cars. Just my $.02

I use Valvoline 20w50 here in Florida year round.I have read that Valvoline is the only oil company that regardless of market fluctuations they always buy there base stocks from the same vendors,they do not shop price.If that is true it leaves me to believe they consistently build quality oil.

All I would add to the previous posts is...Don't use penzoil and try to keep oil off of the bushings, control arms, steering rack, etc when removing the filter. I don't know if its just a well circulated rumor or what but I've heard a lot of people say that penzoil ruins seals. And I have personally seen how dripping oil and power steering fluid made one of my suspension bushings swell to twice its original size. Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, one more thing I forgot to say. A lot of members here insist on using only the Mahle filters and I agree to an extent. However, If you happen to have the workshop manuals you will see in a few of the engine illustrations that they are fitted with "Purolator" filters. Not trying to confuse anyone but I just wanted to point that out.
