DIY tranny flush???
Anyone have any suggestions for a DIY flush for a manual 944 tranny? About time to change my fluid, and wondering if there is a good way to flush it while I am at it. Will not be removing the tranny.
Any advice much appreciated.

I'm presuming you're talking about a Tiptronic. I have no experience, but believe that many shops now have a recycling machine, that circulates the fluid through an automatic tranny, filtering the fluid in the process.
A 5-speed manual simply involves drianing out the fluid from the bottom plug, and refilling to the level of the fill plug, a couple of inches up. Car needs to be reasonably level. Plugs require an 18mm allen. And methods abound for getting the fluid "up" into the fill hole, as there's no room/way to simply pour from the bottle. Look online for hand pumps, and other options, including using an airhose to pressurize the supply bottle of fluid.

actual "power" flushing needs a machine. and the benefits of that are debated.
just replacing the fluid, u just need the allen key, jack or ramps, ratcher/breaker bar. do use a small flathead screwdriver to clean up the allen plug before you try to remove it. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO REMOVE THE FILL PLUG BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE DRAIN PLUG
for filling, either buy a fluid pump like this.
or just stick one end of long 4-5ft length of 3/4" clear plastic hose into the fill port and pour the fluid with a funnel from above the level of the fill port.

Lol anyone who thought that was serious needs to go straight to JoshB or Lart (depending on who's closer) and drop the keys off.
And for real, grab some cheap fluid, fill it run it for a few miles and re drain. If you are on a lift just run it through the gears at idle then drain.

If you are planing to flush the transmission with any type of solvent I would recommend against it for a couple of reasons. The only time it is really necessary is if you are installing a used tranny that has been setting for a long time or its past history is unknown. In that case diesel fuel is an excellent choice as it will clean out the gunk and will leave a thin layer of oil on the internals. Much easier on seals, bearings and bushings. However, keep in mind that as these bearings and bushings wear that it is the "gunk" that fills the void and actually helps maintain the tolerances. Long story short is that flushing it may do more harm than good. IE: If you have a howl or whine in 4th or 5th gear (and most do) it will most likely be worse after the flush. Sometimes gunk is your friend! A better way to go IMHO would be to drain and fill it with a quality gear oil. Redline is my favorite and seems to make the gearbox run much quieter. Hope this helps...Dave
