Default Abysmal MPG/ Fuel problems

Hello,

My car has recently developed a fuel issue. 83 with ~91K miles

On my last fill up, I got 13.5MPG by doing the math..

On cold starts, the engine sputters a bit for maybe 30 seconds before it will run smooth and accelerate smooth.

My O2 sensor is fairly new (probably 10K miles/ fiveish years).

Inside of the cockpit you can smell fuel, but I think that is due to a crappy joint between the header and the exhaust, and the fact that I have removed the rubber shift insulator boot so outside air flows into the cockpit.

So what do you guys think?

Any ideas/ help are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

Disconnect the vacuum lines to your fuel pressure regulator and damper and check for fuel, there shouldn't be any. If there is, the diaphragm is cracked and extra fuel is being drawn into the intake. Wiggle the boot at your coolant temperature sensor while the engine is running, listen for a change in the sound of the engine (could be bad wiring inside the boot).
