I purchased a 1987 944 NA with 103,000 miles on it in January of 2000 for $2600. I now have 121,500 miles on it. Since then I have, (in order):

$300 - Install new Water Pump and Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belt
$20 - Install new air filter
$320 - Install new fuel injectors
$20 - Install new valve seals
$20 - Install new spark plugs
$90 - Install new oxygen sensor
$200 - Install new CAT
$120 - Install new engine mounts
$700 - Install new clutch, I did everything

I also needed new tyres and elected to buy some C2 turbo replica wheels to go with them. This cost $1,700 (including tyres, Bridgestone RE730).

So, for a grand total of about $6,100 I have a 944 that shouldn't fail anytime soon, though I haven't replaced the oil cooler seals, yet. However, it still runs a little rough. I think it needs the vaccum lines gone through, and the throttle body cleaned out. Also, the AC doesn't work yet.

I am happy with my investment. However, with the exception of welding in a new CAT, I did all the work myself.

Cool

Well, my 1st year of ownership was pretty light. Other than oil changes and the normal fluids, I:

Repacked all CV Joints and reversed them ($25 - grease and new bolts)
Installed new alternator ($300 - new!)
Installed new emergency brake shoes ($50)
Installed new sunroof gears and able ($5 for gears, $45 for cable).
Installed new sound system (Kenwood 715s - $315, Polk 4" mids - $75, Polk 1/2 Tewees and crossover - $90, Polk 4X6 - $90, Alpine 200X4 amp - $310, Polk 8" sub and .22 box - $160, Alpine 150X2 amp, $200.

This year.. a bit more.

Complete engine rebuild, new clutch, new starter, new belts and rollers, new suspension from bushings to struts, new rack, New Huntley Stage 2 Turbo, Huntley Stage 3 MAF, Deltagte, MBC, AFPR, exhaust, and all kinds of other stuff.

Right now I have about 8 Grand into it. Should be real fun when it is all done!

Expect about $700 a year.

Do you really want to know? Let's see, I've got a database of my maintenance costs right here. Keep in mind that all my work has been done by a local Porsche Dealership.

1988 944NA Automatic purchased 11/00 with 57K miles.

Maintenance to date:

12/00 Replace all cooling hoses: $350
02/01 Replace belts, rollers, seals, water pump, and addressed front-end oil leak: $1720
02/01 Brake fluid flush and refill: $102.00
03/01 Differential and Auto Trans Fluid refill, auto trans filter replaced: $200.00
05/01 AC leak test and recharge, front bearing repack, reset idle to spec: $620.00

So, that adds up to (drum roll please)...

$2992.00 or $498/month. Man, that $499/month Boxster lease is looking better and better!

Oh, I did the following myself:

Replaced Distributor Cap and Rotor: $87.00
Replaced Plug Wires: $150.00
Replaced Plugs: $20
Replaced Coil: $15 (got a new one at Hershey swap meet)
Replaced Heatlight motor: $25 (got a used replacement at Hershey)
Replaced two window switches: $60
Replaced two wind deflector hinges: $40
Replaced two sunroof gears: $15

Car is going to need new motor mounts, new cat, new power steering hoses, and possible a new Idle Control Valve in the near future. I guess I better find a cheaper mechanic, or start doing this sh** myself!

I got my 951 problem child for less than $6k 3 months ago and so far--

Brake Master Cylinder- ATE $135
Brake Proportioning Valve- $ 53
Brake System Flush- $ 25 (fluid only)
Oil Change $ 20 (oil and filter)
AC and PS belts $ 25
Alternator $155(Autozone)
Rear Shocks $120(Boge)
Exhaust Studs $ 10/8

I've done all my own work and haven't even tallied up what that would cost with Hans und Fritz. I would highly recommend any 944/51 owner to learn to do a sizeable amount yourself to save bucks. On a 951, bucks that go to a new turbo, intercooler, chips, wastegate, boost enhancer, timer, nitrous and so on. Not to mention the intimate knowledge you gain about your car. Also, spend the $42/year and join at least the PCA. There is a bunch of info there and many places give PCA members discounts on parts.

I bought my 87 944S five months ago and have paid $32 for a door arrester and $700 for clutch parts.

According to the freakishly complete database maintained by all three previous owners, the history looks like this:

Dealer maintained since new, to the alarming tune of $25,587.60 parts and service. The graph of maintenance costs over time (yes, the car came with graphs) shows a pretty linear pattern - i.e., the costs have not accelerated as the car has aged.

Hopefully that cost line will plummet, since I'm planning to do all the labor myself!

Too much, but hey what the hell, that's the price of getting your hands dirty.
I bought an 87 na last Nov. with 59K. Since then:
Clutch, slave and master cylinder, motor mounts.
Rotor, cap and plugs and throttle cam.
Oil and gas filter.
Rear pads and brake flush, new brake lines.
CD player and new speakers.
Alarm.
Wipers and spray nozzles
Cooling flush(twice), lower temp thermo and fan switch.
Aftermarket rear valance.
K&N air filter.
I did most of the work myself, except the clutch. All the cooling hoses, timing and all other belts had been replaced by the PO at 50K. He also replaced the cat for $1300 at a Porsche dealer, ouch !!!
Didn't need to but got a set of Design 90 used with SZ tires(all used in great shape)
All told minus tires and wheels about $1600.
Hope it won't fall apart anytime soon.
In the future if needed: wheel bearings, motor seals, oil cooler seals, shocks.

Ok lets see here...I bought my 83 944 with 105K for 2600 and this is what I have done to it.
New intake manifold gaskets.$250
New rear wheel bearings. $325
Complete wiring job under dash $1200 (It was a mess!)

Next is some clutch work. I think the seals went bad in my slave.
