Default Possible replacement Cowl Covers

At the Suggestion of Eric K, of 944 fame, I have been inspired to look into the idea of making a replacement Cowl Cover for the 944, something similar to what I have done for the 928s. ( Search that and you will see what I have done there.)

Where this is leading me is to develop forms for the design of such a cowl cover that I find suitable for the Porsche 944, but also for the 968. The project might even be expanded to the early 944s and maybe even the 924s.

I am somewhat hampered in this project mainly because I do not have any of these cars myself, and it seems that there are not very many of them around here in River City (Grand Junction CO). Therefore, I need some help and input from the folks on this Forum.

What I would like for now is to have some decent pictures of the cowl covers and/or cowl areas of all of these cars, and pictures that are identified by the year and model of the car. I know that removing the cowl covers, with the double sticky tape and all is a bitch, so I don't expect anyone to send both kinds of pictures, but if anyone has their cowl cover out that would be a great kind of picture to have, again, with model and year of the car.

This project should also include the RHD cars, so pictures of those will also be helpful.

The problem is that in order to make this project feasible I think it would be wise for me to include as many of the models of the cars that might have some interest, and that will likely entail me making from 3 to 6 different forms, or at least forms with interchangability for that many different versions of the Cowl Cover. It is most economical for me to do all the forms together since once I have made one set I am not likely to go back and essentially start over.

At this point, having studied some pictures online and that Eric K. has sent me, it would appear that there should ought to be a version for each of the following cars:

944 from about 85 to 92
944 before that?
924 ( and maybe more than one version)
968
Then, also, the RHD version of each of these

If anyone is interested in helping out with pictures, they can be emailed to me at:

jfeather@bresnan.net

Then I will need to find or buy one or two of these cars that I can use for detail measurements and such, since I don't think it is a good idea to try to fabricate these forms just from pictures, or even from one or more of the original cowl covers, since in particular, they don't fit worth a darn. I know there are some of these cars around here, at least the 944, but I haven't figured out yet how to locate them. I'll be working on that next.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

I will be sharing my thoughts about what I have in mind for the new version(s) of these Cowl Covers with you, but probably in a seperate thread. I think most of you will favor what I expect to come up with.

There was a sort of cowl cover/wire harness hider thing on the 968 that fits 944s with a bit of trimming, if you could reproduce that it would be a sure hit.

As for cowl pictures, maybe tomorrow I can get one.

I wonder what and where that was?

Thanks. I'll look foreward to a picture or some.

Um, you can still buy a cowl cover, it's a 968 piece that needs to be trimmed around the bottom windshield lug.

944 or 968, they are both flimsy pieces of thin plastic. Like to see something more substantial/rigid that doesn't need gluing into place and that extends to cover the battery on the 944.

The 968 piece is much less flimsy than the stock 944 one, it actually has some flex. It was $74 direct from my dealer.

Note that the 968 cover also doesn't fit all the way to the edges under the 944 hood. Looks odd in my opinion because it doesn't. It's the reason I never installed mine.

I'm sure we could figure out a way for you to borrow my unmolested 968 version if it would help push this project. I could also take some detailed pics of how it currently fits.

I think we are talking about two different things.

The part right behind the intake is the "968 wiring cover" It is too short to fit on 944's correctly.

Cowl that fits over fan assembly at the firewall is what this post is about.

I will have the sort of used up one from Eric K shortly to work with from his 944. I can also buy one of the latest versions; and probably will. Thanks for the offer. The detailed pictures of how these fit in any and all of the 4 cyl water cooled porsches is what I have actually asked for in this thread. Those will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Can you show us what you're trying to make? Why are you making them? What's wrong with the ones you can buy new from Pelican or Porsche?

I would really like to know what your thoughts actually are about having the Cowl cover cover the battery.
