Default :banghead: 944 Winter Advice

My daily driver was a 1997 BMW 328i. I say was because last week someone (with no insurance!) ran a red light and t-bone my driver side. Thank God i made it out without a scatch but my first car is now totalled, due to somebody else, not payin attention. So now i am forced to use my 1985 944which i purchased 2 months ago, as my daily driver. And here in Michigan the winter season is just beginning. So if anyone has any advice on what i should do or change would be beyond helpful.

Thanks, Adam

Good luck.

944+bad tires+snow= big pain

Lights like to get clogged with snow too, so night trips while snow is falling are bad idea.

Depending on the size, 15" blizzaks are ~90 per tire. That's what I run on my Audi. It's all wheel drive, but I bet even with a good set of snow tires on a 944 it should do fine.

MICHIGAN SUCKS BECAUSE IT SNOWS ALMOST EVERY DAMN DAY.

therefore, BLIZZAKS or FIRESTONE WINTERFORCE/WINTERFORCE STUDDED

AND NO TIRE STAGGER + TWO 75 LB SANDBAGS OUT THE BACK.

AND YOU STAND A CHANCE.

Put snow tires on it, 944s are good in the snow with the right shoes.

Don't know what size you need, but 195/60-16s are:

Bridgestone Blizzak WS60 - $95/tire
Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 - $88/tire

Got those prices off Tirerack.com

I use the WS60

LSD is definitely good to have in snow as well.

I disagree with this... you're more likely to have both rear wheels break traction.

Real, dedicated winter tires are a must - and then you'll be amazed at how good the 944 is in the snow. With the 50/50 weight balance, you have traction for both going and stopping!

Put fresh wiper blades on and make sure your windshield washer reservoir is topped up. Then go enjoy the winter!

Didn't you have insurance on your BMW? If so, buy another winter car. If not, go with the skinniest, most aggressive snow tires you can buy.

I'd be more concerned about what the salt is going to do, than tires. By all means buy a beater for the winter.

A well taken care of car will not suffer much from the salt. I wash my vehicle regularly, and it has been a "winter beater" since 1996. I pay special attention to the undercarriage, and just have mild corrosion on certain fasteners, but nothing wrong with the body.

Xx on good quality snow tires. If Vredesteins are availabe, they are a damn good snow tire for a reasonable price. A dedicated set of cheap winter rims might be a good idea for the snow tires., steel wheels even. Might even allow you downsize a bit, to save some cost on the snow tires, like running 15's instead of 16's.
