Diagnostic tip!!! CV shafts
As a few of you may know a few weeks ago I was under the impression that my transmission went boom.... or so I thought.
Step on in my diagnosis was trying to rotate my CV shafts. Both felt tight neither had any play. I had the car off the ground. Tired to rotate both ends independently of the shaft. during the denial phase of the grieving process I would repeat this several times. This is not a new test for me I spent eight years as a mechanic before returning to school.
A day or so ago I slid under my car to prelube all of the fasteners in preparation for autopsying the trans. I grabbed a CV to help slide myself under the car and i felt a pronounced chunk. I tried rotating the shaft an sure enough the inner CV end spun freely! I moved the CV back into a pre-chunk position and grabbed it with a pipe wrench and a rag, what do you know the torque of the wrench could pop it loose and cause it to freewheel!!!
I have never been happier to be wrong. I pulled the CV apart and it looks like the inner cage attached to the CV shaft had shattered. meaning sometimes it would bind but when the car's full weight was put against it it would push the hunks out of the way and spin freely sounding and feeling like a bad ring and pinion!
I swapped another CV in, AC/DC blasted from the heavens and the 944 is back in black.
Anyway I didn't know this was possible and I bet it doesn't happen much but I thought i'd share this with the community

Great news! One more reason for me to put in new/rebuilt shafts! Since they are 1. out of my car 2. available at a fairly decent price, and unknown age and have been exposed to the elements for many years..so why invite problems? Thanks, Tiger 03447!
