The seat we use is safe. Dont think we would be able to take him in the car in rear facing as he loves to nosey at everything out of the windows. We wouldnt last long with him just staring at the back seat!

Could you make some pics? I've got an early car and I'm very interested! Where exactly is this mounting point? I haven't noticed it yet.

I'm also wondering whether we could simply remove the rear seats and place the baby seats directly on the metal/carpet? That could provide some much needed space for the seats I reckon.

Here's the upper mounting point on the pillar:

Since I don't have the upper seat belt in my 84, there's just a broad-faced beefy screw with a finished top on it in that spot. I'm assuming that screw would be replaced with a substantial bolt during the retrofit regardless of where the seat belt came from.

There is a big plastic cap with a phillips head slot covering the mounting point on each side. Just unscrew the cap and you're good to go.

You certainly could remove the seats entirely, and I think some have done that, but I don't know how the noise would be. It also probably looks pretty ugly unless you get a piece of matching carpet to put down in place. Another issue might be that the seat would be below the mounting points, so they wouldn't actually hold the seat down.

Thanks guys!

So it is possible to get more comfortable and safer 3-point belts than the lap belts I've got.

I've been led to believe that child seats expire. Something about the plastic degrading. Smells like BS to me. I know plastic breaks down with age, but not in 5 years!

There are quite a few forward-facing carseat models (from Graco and Evenflo) that will fit a 911 or 944. Both the strap-in infant type, and the booster type (which uses the car's seatbelt).

You don't need to buy the expensive custom seats.

Except that it's not the plastic, it's the foam that breaks down. Styrofoam (and similar materials) isn't really known for its longevity, and when you subject it to the heat and UV exposure that you get in a car, I can easily believe it'd break down like that.
