You must have a leak somewhere. Check your sunroof seals and door seals.

In the footwells, or behind the seats?

These cars are notorious for cracks forming in the battery tray and allowing water to enter the cabin. Pull out your battery and see what it looks like. If it's cracked, you need to sand it down to bare metal, put some resin or epoxy down, primer it and use some all weather coating.

Another possibility is a worn sunroof seal.

It is in the footwells of the driver and passenger seats.

Either way, you can try the garden hose trick. Park the car and have someone hose it down with you in it and the seats rolled back. Look under the dash and put your hand up against the firewall to see if you can feel any wetness.

I would still pull the battery and have a look. I think what's happening is that the water is leaking from there and trickling behind the firewall on both sides into the footwells.

I'm in agreement with the other guys. I had to deal with both problems but the main one was the battery tray. The water would saturate the passenger floorboard and the area behind the passenger seat. The sunroof seal and drains were clogged on my car and needed replacement/cleaning. Since then I haven't had any issues. Cost of repairfor the batter tray was about $3 ( I suggest a two part epoxy resin) and the sunroof was just the new seal. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Check your battery tray. That is where my problem was.

check the battery tray area and the area near where the under hood fuse panel is for leaves and crap clogging the drain holes from those areas. Rain water runs down the windshield and collects in these areas if the drain holes are clogged. If they fill up enough the water spills over into the A/C ducting and funnels right to the floors of the car. My carpets got soaked every rain until I cleaned out the leaves.

Jay W is right, that's the first thing you check. If you have never cleared your drains, do it now. You have to remove the battery on that side to clean it.

The Alero I have gets leaks almost everytime it rains. Rear footwell gets wet and sometimes completely soaked. I've been back to the dealer 4 times already and they've replaced the seals and whatnot several times. The last time I went it seemed to have been fixed but now its leaking again. Thats GM for ya.

Thanks guys, I'm bringing it to the garage for the winter, to "restore" it for next spring. Hopefully the carpets will dry out without an odor. Do you think the floor boards will rust?

Check under the radio. There is a hose under there that can get clogged and water can spill out into the driver and passenger's footwells.

These cars are very well galvanized. I doubt it will rust if you keep it away from constant moisture.

A early or late 944 uses the same door seals. I found my door seals were kinked on the front section where it curves downward. The seal sort of folded over on itself. Upon getting my Dad to hose it down while I sat inside, I saw water drip down the front inside edge of the door and onto the floor. Both doors were this way. Also my door alignment was slightly off, so it didn't press evenly on the seal when closed. Use the dollar bill method to test.
