Default [Q] Catalytic Converter scrap prices?

Hello Good People,
I removed the original catalytic converter from my 86 a couple years ago and someone said I may be able to fetch a few bucks for it. Any know of a ball park I should be looking at? Just call a salvage yard and take it in?

T.I.A.

Depends on the area. I think I got around $25 a couple years ago.

I tried to scrap two original 911 3.2 cats locally but all the local places i went to would only give me the price for steel, so only a few bucks.

I ended up sending them to a place called Davis Recycling in TN. I got $80 for each cat if i remember right. I mailed it to them which i think cost about $30, so i made about $130 off the two.

Its a fairly easy process, take pictures of the identifying numbers on the cat and text them the picture. They will reply with a quote. The 944 cat is equal in size to the ones off the 911 3.2 so i bet its about the same as what they quoted me. Mail it back to them on your dime, they mailed me a check a few days after receiving them.

Both of the cats i had were unknown mileage but the cores were all intact. The flanges on one were completely rotted out and the other one had cracks at the merge collector..both not worth fixing in my opinion.

Not sure how different a 968 cat is, but I was told a few years ago it was worth $120 for the rare earth metals in it.

Thanks DLarsen!

The continued help on this forum is what has allowed me to have my 86 still on the road after all these years!

You really need to talk to a recycler, and one that will tell you a price based on a code. Salvage yard will only pay you for the steel.

A while back I tossed out the cat from my old BMW 535i. Turns out, that cat had about $200 worth of platinum inside.

Dunno what the Porsche 951 cat has inside, but I'd want to find out before I discard it.
