Default Shipping a block and crank together

Hey guys, need some help. I know a bare block with the matching girdle/balance shafts/housings is ~70 lbs. The crank is ~60 lbs, is that right? Has anyone ever shipped a block + crank inside of it via usps/fedex/usps and how much was it? Trying to avoid having to make the buyer set up freight for this thing if possible. Has to be under 140 lbs (or maybe its 150 lbs?) to send in the mail. I think if I pack it securely in a box, no matter what I do it's going to be over the weight limit with the crank in it..

BTDT you will be fine

UPS/Fedex ground cutoff is 150lbs

Thanks, how much $$$ was it? Did you just wrap the **** out of in in bubble wrap and stick it inside of a sturdy box with lots of packing tape?

I shipped my Triumph Bonneville engine/trans unit via UPS. I built a wooden crate and placed braces inside to keep the engine from shifting in the box.

I got a used Pelican-type case off E-Bay and built a cradle out of 3/4" plywood to secure everything inside, and it worked well.

Definitely not my mail carrier... she's 5-foot-nothing and maybe 100 lbs soaking wet.

Sounds like my folks mail carrier. Only thing that keeps her from blowing away is the mail bag

I just shipped a flathead Ford block with some accessories, total weight 350 lbs., on a pallet. From Albuquerque to Atlanta via FedEx Freight, terminal to terminal, $125. You get huge breaks for taking it to the freight terminal, and for palletizing. I'd be real leery of shipping anything heavy any other way.

Just bubble wrapped and strapped down on an open pallet? No box/crate/covering?

I had an S2 engine shipped to me and it was just strapped to a pallet. I should think you would want to cover you block to prevent any crap from falling inside and to prevent possible bore or stud damage. You could strap it to a pallet and strap a simple wooden box (your neighbor's dog house might be perfect) or even a plastic tub over it to provide some protection.

I made 1/8" steel brackets that bolted into the block, F & R, and into 2x4's that were solidly screwed to the pallet. Bare block with no crank or cam, no oil pan, one head bolted on, intake manifold, generator and starter. No bubble wrap or other protection, the block needed to be machined so it was going to be vatted anyway. This is how it sat on the pallet before the brackets and 2x4's were added.
