Default Easy solution to monitor transaxle temps.

Dimi has come up with a fitting that replaces the oil drain plug. A standard oil temp gauge threads into the fitting and you are in business! Easy as that. Thanks Dimi!

I believe it's 17 mm X 1/4" npt

where'd you get a male plug for the trans hole?

cool idea for the temp gauge.

Is that capillary tubing meant to go all the way to the dash? If so curious why he didn't use a sensor there instead with wiring to a gauge. I don't trust long flexible pipe with hot oil in the cabin.

Dimi from Flying Horse Motorsports. He has done so much with our 944's.

Its a capillary tube for manual gauge. its a sealed tube separate from the oil its monitoring. The temp well is sealed in the trans plug. If the tube got ripped out of the trans nothing would happen other than the gauge would not read. Of course an electric gauge will work with this adapter. The trick part here is the tapped plug that replaces the drain plug. Use and gauge you fancy.

There are aftermarket plugs sold for VW's that appear to be the same threads as 944's, with the male head. I'm going to try one next time I change trans oil.

Pretty clever solution. I'd love to see some data for turbo and NA street driven cars.

Right, but this is a great benifit to the racing community. It will help determine if an auxiliary oil cooler will be needed. Also to compare oils. Dimi experienced 30 degrees cooler running temps when switching to Millers oil. So I'm starting out with Millers so no comparative data.
So can anyone say what is a threshold gear box oil temp? This would help in determining the need for an oil cooler. Thanks

Here's the end result. Nice and tidy. Should be interesting to see how hot this LSD box gets.if I need an auxiliary cooler Dimi has made the mod very easy by giving me a return port to pipe into.

You might get the same results from tapping into an existing hole - one not in the oil - with a smaller electrical sensor. With no cooler I'm guessing your looking at overall temp anyhow vs. oil temp.
I might try that on the 968.

With the wide availability of thermocouples, surely one can be found to mate up with a remote display.

Right, but I'm after oil temps. I need to know if I'm going to exceed the oil's designed heat range threshold. Which I don't know as of yet when it starts to break down. The case is aluminum so temps probably don't get too high with its great heat dissipation characteristic.

That would be very nice. I haven't seen any gauges like that.

This is as far as a 6' line will get you. Which is right where I want it so as not get confused with engine readings.
