Summer tires: The rubber compound in summer versus winter versus all season is radically different. I'm an engineer and I've studied this issue. And, I've driven summer tires below 40 degrees - I can detect a big loss of performance. Summer tires can potentially crack in extreme cold, but the real issue is safety in the way of road grip. Yes, you might drive summer tires all through the winter without any incidence, but below 40 degrees the rubber is hard as a rock and has no road grip. Do you really want to be riding around on something like that? I just don't want to see anyone get hurt - please don't use summer tires below 40 degrees.

Point well taken. I agree with you. So now I'm down to two choices, the BFG g-Force comp-2 A/S or the Kumho Ecsta 4X ll. The BFG 225/50-16 are out of stock till July and I'm leaning towards those. So I have a few weeks to make up my mind.

This has been my thinking as well, thanks so much for weighing in with an expert opinion. Makes me happier that I was thinking correctly on this matter! I was starting to think I was leaving to much on the table with the all seasons.

This might be a good place to post this pic.

Tires are new when they are manufactured, not when installed. Many times tires are warehoused in an outside storage facility and subject to the yearly heat cycles.

Check the date code prior to purchase.

Just put a set of Re71's on my car. So far I like them, only about 100 miles or so, but handling is night and day from what I had.
Car only sees dry weather, spirited driving. Stock 16 inch wheels. In FL so not worried about cool temps.

I got the BFG g-Force comp-2 A/S and I am very pleased but can only compare them to old Kuhmo's. Might get a good price at http://www.discounttiredirect.com/ they also ship free.

I'm a Joey Logano fan so I know about Discount Tire Direct. Tire Rack is my go-to place for tires. They earned my loyalty when I got a defective tire and they replaced it with no BS. Sorry Joey.

Western Suffolk. My wife retired last month and we are looking to move off of Long Island.
I see in your signature you have a few Trek Madone's. Nice bikes! I'm guessing you rode the Jones Beach Bikeway when you lived here. The Bikeway has been extended to Tobay Beach along Ocean parkway in recent years. That's about the only good thing I can say about long Island.

Well after months of hemming and hawing about wheels and tires I pulled the trigger on the 205/55-16 BFG comp-2 all seasons (the 225/50-16 are out of stock at this time). I did however get them from Discount Tire Direct. Brad Keselowski did a fantastic job interviewing Ryan Blaney after his first win, I just had to buy them from Discount Tire Direct. Thanks to everyone especially padhammer for setting the record straight about summer tires. So now in the words of Yul Brynner,
"So let it be written, so let it be done."

I have the BFGs as my everyday tire and on the street you don't want to be going faster than that tire can do. The 71s are of course way stickier but their limits should only be explored on track!
