1986 944....starts up idles great ..1st gear feels like starting in 5th...same with 2nd gear ....3rd,4th and 5th normal....cruises at 70 mph
I have changed plugs ,fuel injectors,fuel pump sending unit...any thoughts...Thanks

My only thought off the top of my head is a broken/bent/loose linkage in the shifter (Either in the stick, the linkage to the back, or the shift arms on the tranny). You don't HAVE 1&2nd, what your getting is 3rd and 4th.... twice.

If that is the case, then when you think your going into 3rd from 2nd, it would feel more like a down shift than an up shift (because your really going from 4th to 3rd). That's what I'd play close attention to as a test.

when I have down shifted from 3rd to 2nd ...it has felt like 2nd......1st and 2nd from dead stop....have to give it a lot of gas ..so it does not bog down and cut off....

Hmmmm... I really don't know then, maybe someone with some better ideas will post up. Let us know if you find out the cause, I'm interested!

OK .....Thanks....I have checked all vacuum lines...etc...car sat for 5 years....changed all fluids....gear oil....

Ok...if the cat is blocked...would it start up ,idle run fine in all gears except 1st and 2nd....even runs good down shifting into 2nd....

i wonder if the clutch is slipping in 1/2 gears...
also a lean running condition will make the car feel like it has no power..

OK....slipping would cause higher RPM s ?.... ...I am experiencing lower ,have to give it more throttle to keep it from stalling ...very little power....reverse normal release...as well as 3rd 4th and 5th

new fuel? How old is the fuel filter? Also does the engine get up to temp? I know mine dogs a bit till its warm.

new fuel ,new filter ,new fuel pump and sending unit,new fuel injectors ....made sure fuel line was cleared....thinking fuel pressure regulator and damper might not be 100 %

I think you would see FPR/FD issue at higher RMP's more then at just off idle. But anythings possible I suppose. It's weird it's 1st AND 2nd only. I could see things that could effect taking off from a standstill, but your already going 15-20 when shifting to 2nd.... This one really has me stumped.

At 20 MPH, what is the RPM in first gear?
