Need help with replacing speakers in my 928
Hi everyone,
Hope driving season is going well for you and your ride(s).
After a hectic year of moving, finishing my degree and working on the house I am finally finding time to think about the 928. Performing the deferred maintained is prime (to ensure the car can survive), yet I am thinking about the day when the car is restored. Many, many hours ahead.
With that said one important side concern is the "tunes" in the car.
I bought two sets of Rockford Fosgate Prime R14X2 ( see specs here: https://www1.crutchfield.com/p_575R1...X2.html?tp=102 ) paired with a JVC KD-X33MBS head (see specs here: https://www1.crutchfield.com/p_105KD...S.html?tp=5684 ).
I believed at the time I bought the speakers they would be a close fit, but a fit nonetheless. With the door panels off and speaker in my hand I am not so sure. The Rockford Fosgate speakers are top-mount with a depth of: 1-11/16" (43mm).
Another concern is the cost of everything. Mechanical repairs take precedent over music at this point
FYI, the speakers in the vehicle now are not original. The current speakers are mounted to plastic "adapters". Is that a good thing?
My question is: what experience do you have fitting speakers into a 928?
I have a base 1981 928 5speed w/comp package.

Ed:
The problem with the front speakers is the mounting depth. According to Crutchfield, The speaker(s) are for the rear side panels not the doors. They will hit the door skin and not fit. Measure the depth and shop accordingly.

Hey Ed,
Yes to the above, don't just buy stuff and expect it to fit, measure and plan carefully. And FWIW, here's what I did on my '83 which is probably very similar to your '81.
The car came originally equipped with really tiny front speakers in the upper door panels. I also think it may have had tiny speakers in the rear quarter panels too, where the rear seats are.
Way back in the day I bought a pair of ADS round drivers, probably six inch, with satellite tweeters for the front. I also bought a pair of rectangular ADS speakers (driver + soft dome tweeter) for the rear. I installed the front drivers in the lower forward section of each door. As I recall I installed a 1/8" aluminum plate to the door frame (with a circular cutout for the driver, and drilled and tapped for the speaker mounting screws). I also installed the satellite tweeters behind the stock perforated area in the upper door panels. In the rear I installed the rectangular combo units by making a circular cutout as needed for the driver itself, and added appropriate reinforcement to the back of the quarter panel with an aluminum plate and fiberglass cloth, again tapping the plate to accept the mounting screws. Also added an amp under the passenger seat. Was a massive upgrade in sound quality while keeping the look very stock on the door panel (and the drivers in the lower panel and rear speakers are very much out of the way and barely visible). Still going strong today - though I also upgraded the head unit, twice over the years, now with one of those cool flipout screens with GPS and added a rear camera too!
Just some ideas. Invest in high quality components, plan carefully, take your time, enjoy!
Cheers,
Rick

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the advice. Yes, planning is the key.
My discomfort with these speakers is partly due to the fact Crutchfield suggested this line of speakers as the proper ones to use in both locations, rear and front. Not knowing better I bought them on faith. Never had an issue before and am a bit surprised at this install.
Back to the drawing board.
Thanks, again

Mike -- you are definitely correct, the depth is the limit.
Did not have time for proper measurements but a quick bit of investigation showed the area appears to be wide enough for any modern speaker. Tall enough also. Depth is the concern. One and one-quarter inch depth is ok. After that it gets dodgy. 1-1/2" may work but the 1-11/16" is a bit tight. The S-410 speakers are 1-21/32" per the spec sheet.
Does anyone have the depth measurement from the inside of the door panel to surface of the door inner skin?

I'm pretty sure a set of ADS 200i speakers would fit, if you could find them. The car was designed for 4x6 speakers in the door so I'm sure you can find a component or coaxial set slim enough to fit.
They do make adapter plates for 4x6 to a standard 4 inch speaker so you should look into that as well.
A PO of my car swapped out the interior to one from a 84 so I can't help you with the stock speakers used in my 81.

Take a good look at MB Quart speakers. I just installed 6 of them (the rear two are another brand), and drive them with a 480 watt Blaupunkt amplifier. Im happy with them. Maybe you would be too.

I replaced all speakers in my 83 a few years ago. Rears no issues. Fronts - Sony 100mm/4" - seemed to fit, then I found every now and again the whole HU would go off the air. When it worked, it would go off if I tapped the door skin over the left speaker - one of the connectors was shorting on the door inner panel. Fixed it with a little panel beating of the pocket, no trouble since.

I actually boughts 2 sets of these speakers. Intially when i first installed them they didnt fit correctly because the wiring seemed to be in the way.. I then rotated the speaker and they cleared and ended up fitting ok. I have them installed in the front and rear deck and sound pretty good.
