Starter Problems

OK with this answer think about what was the last thing you fixed just prior to the starter not working.
All started a couple of years after I installed the hi torque starter. It started to spin without engaging. I then changed back to the Bosch starter. Then it started to jam and I would have to tap it with a hammer. Finally took it off and had it rebuilt in a shop but the problem didn’t go away.
Greg and Reanimotion bring up some good points.
SO,If the engine was somehow jacked up on the bell housing or oil pan and one of the locating dowels was missing then this could explain the sudden mismatch of the starters.
Or if the starter may have hit something and bent the lower bell housing mounting area.
Your task,
loosen the 4 bell housing upper bolts so they are about 3 turns from out,
and remove the 2 trans mount to cross member bolts and slide the bell housing and TT back to verify the engine locating dowels are in place.
Post a picture of the bolts used to hold the slave in place.
Look at the front side of the flywheel to see if the Pressure plate bolts are not protruding and possibly hitting the engine .
If you find nothing then replace the lower bell housing and install a factory starter.
NOTE even though the ring gear is chewed up it can still function but you have to find the mismatch first.

Bump... any resolution on this thread?
I am experiencing a similar issue with a IMI starter on a dual disc starter ring. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...l#post18314468

Starter pinion tooth bevel
Hi Sean, starter motor teeth normally have a ‘lead in’ bevel. This bevel must be on the trailing sedge of the pinion teeth, not on the leading edge. Look at your bosch 928 starter and your after market hi torque starter. From your photos i think the bevel face differs on each. I had much the same problem with my hi torque starter on my corvair powered 914. Changing the pinion to one with the correct bevel face immediately fixed my problems. (And making sure I had the correct ‘pinion at rest’ measurement - you only want a small pinion at rest clearance but you do not want too much ‘throw’ or the pinion may over engage and not throw out readily enough). Good luck. Dave
