Default Early '86 for sale?

My dog may need spine surgery and I'm giving thought to selling my early 86 828 to cover expenses

. I'll throw this out there and see how brutal the mosh pit will be.. I have no idea what the market value is. What I do know is that I have over $40k invested in what is probably a $10k car. I realize that it is all my fault for making it MY car, and the fact that I don't do my own wrenching, not even oil changes. I have owned the car for 17yrs and put on 12-15k miles. Always garaged, babied. Black/black auto, non LSD, sunroof, all receipts, vortech supercharger, engine out install included every porken upgrade, fuel lines, oil pan gasket, PS pump, MSDS headers w/ custom exhaust, approx. 80k miles. Price is $10k depending on what is included. Indoor cover, outdoor cover, 3 sets of wheels, extra parts, original parts, etc. THE GOOD: paint is good, interior is good, seats have had covers since day one, no wear even on driver bolster, cold air, sounds great, pulls like a train. THE BAD: cheap plastic dash coverlay fits poorly, cruise never worked-resoldered brain-replaced vacume lines-gave up, hatch opens closes fine with key-will not open with button, voltage drain (probably due to big stereo/alarm) dash gauges all read low-not accurate, doors lock with key or ****-do not work from central lock button, wipers very slow. I will try to post pics, but never goes well. Call/Text Rick at 816.853.4663 for pics or additional info. Most recently car was shipped to Mo in Wichita for A/C conversion, fuel pressure issue, and trans adjustment last spring.

Well, I believe you have your priorities correct and I hope the surgery goes well. I think your price is low, but sometimes the "time" factor in a sale is pressing and the driving season is nearing its close in your locale. Has it been dynoed ? Someone should grab this, even if it is an auto.

I agree that $10k is a smoking deal. You could probably get double that if you cast a bigger net and were willing to wait a while such as posting on internet sites to reach buyers outside of your area. You might look into selling it on Bring A Trailer. All that takes time though and you might need a buyer quickly so that route might not work for you. The mods are sort of specific which probably limits potential buyers but that supercharger is likely to get some attention. I'm sure the go pedal works really well.

I've been there with our pups, back to back cancer surgeries for our previous dog. It was worth every penny, gave him 3-4 more years of a good life.

Just a thought....back when the first surgery popped up we were not prepared financially and I ended up using Care Credit which allowed us to finance the surgery at 0% interest for I think 24 months.

Maybe look into that, help take the sting out of the cost.

GLWS, awesome car!

That is a steal, even without the jump post cover. I wish I could, but I can't. Best of luck with your fur baby.

Wow. I'm trying to figure out how I can buy this car, and another 928 is the last thing I need. That tells me that your asking price is too low. Way too low IMO.
As Blauer says, it all depends on how quickly you need to make this happen.
If you do end up marketing it beyond RL, I highly suggest that you remove the seat covers to expose the condition of the seats. 99% of the time, the presence of seat covers suggest that they're not protecting beautiful seats, but hiding trashed seats.
I think you're going to find a very supportive mosh pit
Beautiful car, BTW

I like Hacker's suggestion. Possibly finance the cost of surgery thru the vet? If that buys you some time you can market your 928 properly and get top dollar - certainly enough over your $10k ask to cover a high interest rate on the loan.
If you really need this to happen a.s.a.p....Hoi, are you out there?

Definitely DO look into the Care Credit option. Been in your situation before and it is a good option. Your 928 seems very nice, try to keep it.

I will chime in with another recommendation for Care Credit. They helped me deal with pet surgery a number of years ago when I was far poorer.
Worth considering.

Good Luck with the surgery on your dog! May the two of you have many more happy years together.

Thank you for all the positive comments. I do have other financial options, just thought it might be time to thin the herd. The dog is responding well to treatment and I may put off the surgery scheduled for November. His diabetes caused blindness a couple years ago and I sprung for lens replacement which cost more than the current issue. He helped me get through losing my wife to pancreatic cancer 6yrs ago so he is REAL important. She actually bought me the car as a birthday present 17yrs ago Nov8. The mechanic who I trusted the car with also passed a few years ago and competent 928 mechanics are a (no pun) dying breed. These cars should be with those who do their own wrenching. The car is for sale, but I'm in no actual hurry and won't be heartbroken if I keep it. It seems a shame that I rarely drive it, usually just to car things. I have always appreciated them as art as much as a vehicle. I don't regret the experience at all, particularly all the help I received right here over the years. Thanks again.

cheap plastic dash coverlay fits poorly ---- fixable, though slightly costly.
cruise never worked-resoldered brain-replaced vacume lines-gave up - - maybe needs a brain. I've never even tried my cruise...
hatch opens closes fine with key-will not open with button --- common problem, afternoon fix
voltage drain (probably due to big stereo/alarm) --- a second afternoon of work?
dash gauges all read low-not accurate, --- a grounding problem if they ALL read low
doors lock with key or ****-do not work from central lock button ---- one door lock is probably out of manual adjustment. annoying but fixable
wipers very slow -- need lube

these are things that aren't tough to fix. I feel that if a 928 has pretty paint OR good mechanicals OR a nice interior is worth 10,000$ these days. You have two out of three - and really, 3 out of 3 bc that dash doesn't look that rough. Add in a very nice looking engine modification - late car power with early car sex appeal!

I think you are pricing your car much too low. In fact, for 10,000 I'm surprised it didn't sell in one day.

Alas, I have one already, and can't afford another.

Haven't driven the car since original post. Tags due end of July and due for coolant flush. Just running this up the flagpole again before I spend any more $$ on it. Call or text for additional info.
