Default Cam Gear Wear

What do you guys think? Are these cam gears okay, or would you replace them? Also, any gotchas when replacing?

put a belt on it and drive it,
start saving for a new set of cam pulleys at the next belt change or in 8 years what ever is next

Thanks Stan. That's what I was hoping. I don't have Ken's 32v timing gear tool. I do know my oil pump gear is too worn, so I will replace that.

I would not hesitate to use those for my next timing belt. If you are really keen you might consider contacting Colin [Lizard 928] to have them recoated before they pass the point of no return due to wear depending on how you feel about such.

Yup. Good for one more belt as long as the tension is correct.

The idea of sending them to Colin is a good one, but it will delay the job and besides, I do not have Ken's timing tool, so was not looking forward to pulling those gears.

It’s not a big deal to R&R the gears with or without cam timing tools. If you follow the correct procedure you can get new gears installed in the same place as the old gears. Obviously if the old gears were off, so will be the new ones. When it’s time to do the gears holler...

I would have them re-coated. I have a local guy that does them for about $80 Canadian. Or run them and change them on the next belt service.

Thanks for the offers guys. I'm leaving them on for this job. I'm good with tension tool Seth, but I'll ping you in a few years at next TB change

Ed if you replace the oil pump gear,
the new part is steel not AL.
NOTE if you get the steel version then the 1 MM spacer thats on the pump shaft must be removed before you fit the steel gear.
NOTE this entails removal of the woodruff key

Ed,

Very easy to index mark the cam wheel relative to the screw holes for the rotor mount. Agree that if you were to have your cam sprockets coated there will be a time delay so understand that one.

As suggested already those sprockets without doubt will last another belt and a few years

This is very helpful, and new information that I have not seen in any of the prior threads. Thanks Stan.

Pretty sure there's a note about that in the WSM or one of the writeups I was using when I did my motor last year, or maybe it was just offered up in my thread by the gurus here.
