Upgrade 1979 928 A/C Compressor to 2nd Gen 1980 and newer
I recently completed the upgrade of the A/C compressor on my 1979 928 to use the 2nd generation Nippon Denso compressor used in the 1980 and newer 928s. I needed new hoses and the original compressor front seal was leaking. It was time to move to R134A refrigerant. The original parts are expensive and hard to source. On a 100F / 38C day, the center vent was blowing 40F / 4C cool air following this upgrade.
The A/C hoses (I sourced them new from Porsche, O-rings included) and receiver/dryer for a 1980 model 928 enable the use of the newer style compressor while keeping the original condenser. Naturally all the mounting hardware for the 2nd gen compressor need to be sourced. Used parts should be available. Rebuilt compressors don't include the Suction and Pressure fittings to connect the hoses and also need to be located.
I have a detailed write-up with photos and part numbers available. To obtain it, please send me a note to info @ electronikrepair.com (remove spaces) and I'll sent it to you.

This is interesting because Iplant to do the same. My 78 has the Behr compressor of which I don't know if it can be reconditioned. I have an old used newer type compressor in stock that should be easier to upgrade.
My question: how about the bracket that holds the compressor? Can the old bracket be used for the newer compressor?

I rebuilt my Behr compressor off my '79 back in 2011. It was difficult finding a kit for it, and I did damage the front seal when disassembling it (not included in the gasket seal kit) and while it worked for a few days it would leak out the R134A. BMW used the same compressor in the late 70's on certain models (just with different brass hose fittings) and I was able to find a used one on Ebay that I used for parts. I used the front seal off the BMW compressor, ordered a new gasket seal kit and it's been working great ever since. The rebuilt kit I obtained from a place called Polarbearinc.com, but I didn't see a kit for the 78-79 Porsche 928 Behr compressor anymore. Over the years I have seen rebuilt Behr compressors on Ebay, and once in a while used BMW compressors. #0140903506.

Hello Ad0911. You will need the entire mounting A/C compressor system from the 1980 and newer Porsche 928, the existing mounting hardware will not work. My write-up contains the complete parts list and PET diagrams.
