Default Wanted: 1983/1984 Limited Slip

Title says it all. I'm looking for an '83/'84 928 Limited Slip, for a special project.

The serial number on the limited slip will be close to this number: 4061006293 838146 S40

These limited slips were found in the G28/07 and G28/08 manual transmissions, with the limited slip option. If you have an entire transmission with a limited slip inside....and you don't want to bother taking it out, I would be interested in buying the entire transmission.
These limited slips were also found in the A28/01-03 automatic transmissions from '83 and '84 vehicles with the limited slip option.

You cant have mine, I am still using it! We get enough wet days down here to make it essential.

I have a limited slip auto trans out of an 85 Euro if that would work. I will need to check the number on it.

Great. I'm not absolutely sure what Porsche installed in an '85 Euro, but I'm guessing it is the later limited slip with the four oblong windows in the housing:

1985-1989 928 Limited Slip

What I'm looking for is the 1983-1984 limited slip, which has two round holes:

Hmmm. I would have to open it up to be sure. It is a A28/06 trans.

This is a job for a cheap USB borescope through the fill hole that you don't mind having smell like MolyS2.

Mine is the oblong 85-89 version.

Thanks for the idea Rob!

Greg,

If you can wait, Ron Borras will check the one I have at his place in NC. It is an 84 with the M220 option (limited slip) He will be back into town this weekend and will check the serial number for you and give you a call.

I can certainly wait. Thanks for taking the time to check.

Folks wondering why the 83-84 LSD is special should know they are an early "8-disk" type but are a direct replacement for the later "4-disk" 85-89 LSD.

Charge accordingly for these unicorns!

While dimensionally different than other year 928 limited slips, the '83/'84 limited slip comes set-up identically to both the earlier and later limited slips. Zero functional difference. They do have four friction discs, but two of the friction discs are touching each other, making these limited slips have four total "active" friction surfaces....exactly the same as all the other model limited slips.

Yes, the two friction discs can be separated and have eight total active friction discs,, but that comes at a rather "high" price. You see, if the two friction discs are separated, one of the active friction surfaces must me made by a friction surface touching a spider gear pressure ring....which is extremely expensive to replace, when the friction disc wears out.
.
Porsche made a total of 9,016 '83/'84 838's, 21% came with a limited slip....or 1877 cars with limited slip.
I've never seen a Unicorn....and I doubt there are almost 2,000 of them.....except in Ken's dreams.

I've certainly got a few of these limited slips in transmissions, but I was hoping to find a loose one, so I don't have to disassemble a transmission to get one. Simply a convenience thing, for me.

The "project" I'm working on doesn't require me "keeping" one of these limited slips. I will only require to use it for a few months....with no additional active use or wear. So, if someone has one that is just sitting around, gathering dust, but thinks they need it, I'd be happy to rent it.

Or, as I offered, I can buy it.....or the entire transmission....whatever the person who has one, desires.

I'm not trying to "grab up" someone's super rare unicorn...simply offering to turn someone's unneeded part into cash.

Clarification added.

Huh? #5 and #7 are keyed to the housing and cannot turn. To increase the ratio an additional #6 is added between the adjacent #5?

I lifted these from 928MS website some time ago, IIRC

Note the note above concerning changing the ratio for 'sporting events' - the part number is for the 83-84 unit.

This all reminds me of a fun fact I came across when I was hot to install a LSD. The 928 LSD has equal leading/trailing ramps on #7.
Some LSDs can be spec'ed with unequal ramps for a different ratio when braking vs. accelerating.
