ABS warning light has come on
well I have 680 miles left to drive today to conclude my 3500 mile zig zag across the US. I parked at the hotel in South Bend yesterday evening after driving about 700 miles. I needed to move the car in the parking lot, turned the key and the ABS warning light came on. from reading other threads, I can tell you that the light came on after cranking the engine but not moving. this suggests the ABS relay, not the sensor. my question: online, I see ABS relays for $90-100. should I be using only Porsche relays that cost $100? or is it ok to use other relays that cost much less...if in fact there are other relays that can be purchased? thanks

a good used relay will also work fine

In a parking lot situation you usually turn the wheel to it's extremes so I'd check the ABS sensor wiring too. Over my 35 years of car ownership I've had many bad ABS sensors / wiring and zero ABS relay failures but who knows for sure. Just throwing it out there. Safe Travels. Being a City Slicker I never did much long distance driving but recent events forced some long distance travel with the family, not in a 928 unfortunately.

I would be checking the wiring and connectors first, also.
In my "ABS light came on" scenario, it was caused by a harness dropping out of a retaining clip, and snagging on spinning parts in the wheel well.
I don't recall when the light would come on, at start-up or on first brake application, but it turned out to be an easy fix.
Annoying that I couldn't source the cable grommets to make it like original, though.

I have replaced 6 ABS relays on the CE panel, this cured the instant on ABS light.
Usually what blows this relay is shorting the ABS connection point to the fender while removing the screw,
or putting on a hi boost jumper to start a car with a dead battery

This user plus others have found instances where the harness fasteners break and the harness hangs in various places, getting banged up by rotating drive train components. Every time you change oil/fluids, slide up and down under the car and inspect all the ABS cables and fasteners

Does anyone know if there is a way to test the ABS relay on the CE panel? I'm in the ABS warning light club too. Just checked my wiring, it "appears" to be ok. Would love to test the ABS relay on the CE panel before I order up a new one. Thanks. -Ed

Oddly enough my 944S also has one set of grommets gone on the back, but the brake sensor wire doesn't hang on the axle. Different design, just looks stupid right now.

Yep - same, same here.
The car-side clips are fine, but the matching part that is on the harness itself is toast.
I suppose I could have sourced an entire new harness, but I have all the correct wire, plugs, and sheathing - so I made one.
