Default Moving across the country

The time has come to move my little car collection from Baltimore to Seattle.

2 weeks ago, I prepped by V12 Jag XjS convertible, and did the run. It was a fantastic trip.

Now it is the 928s turn. Final servicing after the engine install, and cleaning and respraying the undercarriage will be tomorrow. Monday I refit the interior, and head out Tuesday.

I plan on taking it up Pikes Peak in Co, then down to SLC, then up through Oregon and into Washington.

It will be interesting to compare this ride with the Jag.

Then in a few weeks I hope to be moving my TVR out to Seattle.

And if our borders open up again, I will driving my S600 from Kampala, Uganda to Mombasa, Kenya, and shipping it to Seattle.

Where in Washington will you end up? "Down to SLC" must refer to altitude from Pike' Peak. Watch the weather, as the peak has probably seen some early snow or will soon.

Travel safe! Share pics and route info, know that you have members here and at the OC along the way.

Awesome, I've driven 2 928's across the country, from VA to MT and from Pitt to MT. Both great drives in a shark - drive all day, for a thousand miles, and almost no fatigue! I also drove a 07 Shelby GT Mustang, an 06 Mustang GT, and some regular grocery getters across these distances. The Mustangs wer a blast too. My Audi A6 supercharged is an excellent cross country tourer as well. Have not done a "big" trip in my 911 (997) yet, but I know it would be nowhere near as comfy as the 928s.

Enjoy! Post some pics. And good luck with the move.

Doc,

I will (hopefully) end up at my yacht club in Bremerton, Wa. On the Olympic peninsula, directly across from Seattle. I only vivit Baltimore once, maybe twice a year. And am never there for very long. Hopefully the boys will get more use out there

The PacNW928 group is a great bunch of guys if you're not already subscribed. Pretty quiet lately, but always willing to lend a hand.

And I drove my '88 S4 from New Jersey to Seattle (via Tennessee > LA) back in 2006 when I purchased it. Had a great time.

Good luck with the drive! -Ed

Pikes Peak is nice, but don't expect to do any hill climb practice. The drive can be very slow with traffic. However, you are going at an off time, so it may not be so crowded. There are many summit and mountain roads that are much more fun. The temperature is falling, but the weather has been dry. I hope you have all season tires for the drive. The cool mountain temperatures could be trouble for summer tires. You may want to consider taking Highway 40 instead of 70 to SLC. It will take more time, but is much more interesting driving a winding two lane road then a boring interstate. There a few of us in the Denver area that may be able to meet up if you have time. Good luck and have a great trip

I would be happy to take a break if anyone in the Denver area is free. I expect to be there on the weekend. Not sure which day yet, as the car is still on the lift. I am taking the opportunity to clean up the chassis and suspension, as I have use of a lift and a steam cleaner.

Any 928 parts that you don’t want to take.
I am in the Baltimore area.

Sounds like a great trip! You certainly have some exotic locales in your driving lifestyle! I'd offer support or lodging but I'm way off your route...

Keep the shiny side up and enjoy every minute of that great 928 motor music!

So, the trip started auspiciously this morning. 7 am, backroads in Western Maryland.

cruising along, heard a bang. Car shifts into gear, but wont move. I suspect the coupler between the intermediate shaft and driveshaft.

I am now back in Baltimore. Car will be up on the lift in a few hours....

IIRC you were posting about clutch work just prior to departure. Following the "last thing I worked on is the first place to look" protocol, you are starting with the correct suspicions. keep us updated.

My suspicion are the bolts on the forward clamp over the intermediate shaft and the driveshaft.

Clutch operates fine. I can hear the cutch spinning both in gear and out of gear.

I should have the car in the air in another couple of hours

Well after an exhaustive examination under the chassis, I am convinced this is the problem. The mech who installed it 150 miles ago wasn’t sure.

I asked him to humour me and just put it back
