Clutch replacement - Spec or Stock?
Hi All,
I just joined the forum today, after picking up a project '82 928. It's a non-runner, so I'm sure I'm in for an adventure. But the PO told me that he parked the car about a year ago when the clutch gave out, so once I have the engine running again replacing the clutch is next on the list.
I don't drive my cars very hard, so I don't need much in the way of performance equipment. Everything I've read about the Spec Stage 2 clutch makes it seem like it's an economical replacement for the stock clutch. Does that jive with the experienced wrenchers here?
I would normally lean towards keeping everything stock, but going that route seems unnecessarily expensive by comparison.
Thanks for any input.
Nick

get a stock clutch, your engine doesnt make enough power to warrant any clutch upgrades.
before you order any parts take out the old clutch and post pictures of what you have,
we can then give you advice on what you need to replace

Not spec. The one I ordered recently was junk. I made a thread for it with pix documenting all the problems

Yes I have a spec clutch in my 996 ls1 twin turbo car. Everything is new and the clutch chatters making the car unpleasant to drive. I hope it gets better with time, or it’s coming out and going in the garbage.

I have a clutch assembly that I bought new, put in and then pulled out less than 10,000 miles later if you’re interested. $500 for both discs, pressure plate, release bearing.

Thanks to everyone for the input! I had seen some posts about the Spec clutches chattering, but read one in particular that indicated that the issue was related to kits Stage 3 or higher. Glad I asked.
Stan - I'm in Oak Park, IL, a little west of Chicago. I'll gladly welcome any help I can get.
Silver79 - not sure how to send a PM on this forum, but I added you as a contact and sent a friend request. I'd be interested in the setup, yes.
Thanks again!

Nick -
you will find everyone on this board has a wealth of knowledge about these cars and is more than willing to assist however possible - as you have already seen...
I do have a question though after having gone through a similar clutch issue recently on mine. Based on your description of the problem, are you SURE the issue is actually the clutch mechanicals themselves or could it be hydraulic in nature (bad slave, busted line, etc.). The clutches on these cars are very robust as was said....but the hydraulic side can have weak points if not cared for over time.
if I missed this earlier my apologies and get us some pics!

I second this notion- would check slave and lines first. The old ones (even if they look fine) have a tendency to start doing the balloon thing when you try to make them work resulting in the disks not separating all the way.
Or maybe it already has Spec disks in there

Nick, you have a pm. I put the clutch in an 82 that I had a while back. Unfortunately, after taking the car apart for paint there were significant other issues found with the car at which time I decided to part the car out. As others have suggested I would look at the clutch hydraulics first and then let us know what you find. Is the clutch pedal on the floor? Does it feel like the pedal has any resistance when pressed?

Finally got back to the car to check out the clutch - pedal is not on the floor, gives resistance when I step on it, and springs right back up. I'm not sure how much resistance I should be feeling, though. It did feel a little soft, but I've never driven a 928 before. Are the clutches on these relatively easy to engage?

If you are certain that there is a problem, you can have it out of the car and look at it, very easily.
As far as the Spec clutch is concerned, while it is a choice, it's not a very viable choice, especially for a stock/mildly modified engine.
All of the stock pieces still exist (some of them are a bit expensive) and they work extremely well, when the correct parts are correctly lubricated, correctly installed, and correctly adjusted.
