Default Thinking about selling 84 supercharged 928 SOLD

Hi guys,
I've been around here about 15 years. I acquired my Hellbronze over brown 84 us 928S Auto at that time and have had lots of fun with it. Over the years I've installed the 928 Motorsports Stage 2 Supercharger kit. Car runs great and has substantially increased power from stock. Interior is mostly repaced using Rob Budd's brown leather with black and white pascha.
New Panamera wheels with newish tires. Paint is good with no rust visible to me.
Due to supercharger install, the belt driven fan is removed. This requires placement of electric fans, which require an upgraded alternator. I have the Mechmen 150 amp model and this works nicely. AC blows cold with new compressor and condenser (parallel flow). Everything works well with possible exception of passenger window switch. (Replaced 10 years ago, but a little unreliable. Hard to evaluate since I almost never use it.)
I don't have many pictures, but my adventures and efforts are well documented here. This is a very nice car that should not disappoint. I have some, but not all parts taken off during SC install.
I am asking $15K from members only.

I am 72 years old now, and I find I just don't drive the car anymore.
It is stored inside winters and driven occasionally from May to November in Chicago.
It's time for someone else to enjoy this car.
Please contact me by email with questions: j.kenzie@sbcglobal.net

Thanks,
Dave

Here's most of the things I've done for the car besides maintenance, pads rotors, etc.:

1984 Porsche 928 Modifications under my ownership since 2005

A/C supplemental relay in engine compartment

Rear hatch actuator

Radio antenna from Honda S2000

Supplemental fuse box in engine bay attached to jump post

High output alternator

Elimination of air pump and associated air piping, Porkensionr install, and exhaust mods

928 Motorsports supercharger install with numerous associated mods

Compact mini starter with coil/resistor relay

Parallel flow A/C condenser

928 Motorsports aluminum radiator

Relocation of Thermotime switch

New brown leather and Pascha interior from Classic9 Interiors

Cold air intake for supercharger

A/C supplemental relay in engine compartment

The A/C control board in the dash is known to have a marginally undersized output relay that activates the compressor clutch. In order to reduce load on this component, its output now is used only to energize a standard Bosch relay in the engine bay. This draws power from the supplemental fuse box in the engine bay. Fuse No. ___

Rear hatch actuator

The original 928 rear hatch release motor had internal wear and was becoming unreliable. Rather than replacing with a used one or repeatedly repairing original, a modern linear actuator from Volkswagen was installed. It uses the same wiring as original and roughly the same mechanical attachment points. It operates quickly and has been reliable.

Radio antenna from Honda S2000.

After several antenna replacements for mechanical shaft movement failure, I decided to install an amplified, fixed, flexible antenna in the factory rear quarter panel location, but using the antenna assembly from a Honda S2000. I owned an S2000 at the time and inspection suggested the unit would fit well. In fact the swap was easy and used the 928 wiring without modification. The Honda antenna had to be reconfigured very slightly to fit the profile of the 928. The small antenna works better than the factory 928 antennas, and has no moving parts to lubricate or fail.

Supplemental fuse box in engine compartment

As a result of my need for additional electrical circuits related to my supercharger installation, rather than adding single fused wires to the 928 jump post, I decided to add a 12 circuit fuse box here instead. It has allowed flexibility in addressing electrical needs relating to cooling fans and other device in the engine bay without the voltage drop associated with longer wire runs often with undersized factory circuit wiring. The fuse layout is as follows:

(+)

1 7

2 8

3 9

4 10

5 11

6 12

(-)

POSITIVE POLE

1. Main Fan 30A BLK

2. Left Aux Fan 15A RED

3. Battery charger 10A RED

4. Alternator cooling fan 5A WH

5. Spare

6. Spare

7. Resistor/coil 30 YELLOW

8. Right Aux Fan 15A RED

9. AC clutch 10A BLUE

10. Intercooler water pump 10A VIOLET

11. Intercooler fan 15A BLUE

12. Spare

NEGATIVE POLE

In addition to the supplemental fuse box, there is a switched ground-controlled relay for both the intercooler fan and intercooler pump. The switch is located in the cockpit just in front and above the hood release. When turned off the intercooler acts as a thermal mass intercooler. When switched on, the air-to-water intercooler system provides additional charge cooling by running the IC pump and IC fan.

High output alternator

With the installation of the 928 Motorsports supercharger, the mechanical engine driven cooling fan is eliminated to make room for the supercharger head unit. This necessitates the installation of multiple (in my case 5) electric cooling fans, and the stock alternator will not handle these loads. I therefore installed a 150 amp 928 Motorsports alternator which is made by Mechman Alternators. Even with this alternator, charging at idle is marginal, and a small pulley was added. The smallest available is 2 ¼” v-belt. Mechman rebuilt the alternator twice, once for an internal short and once for diode replacement. The company was very helpful.

Elimination of air pump and associated plumbing, exhaust, and Porkensionr

This is really part of the supercharger install. In addition when the air pump is removed a Porkensionr timing belt tensioner kit was installed with an air pump delete bracket. The air pump plumbing connected to the OEM catalytic converter. This converter was remover and a high flow modern cat was installed.

At the same time a Borla cat-back exhaust was install.

928 Motorsport supercharger install with associated mods

The Stage II 928 MS Kit was installed around 2014. With the front of the engine exposed, timing belt, cam gears, Porkensionr, and also oil pan gasket were replaced or installed.

The supercharger requires fuel line mods, electrical fans, a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, and an air/water intercooler with water pump and fender mount heat exchanger. (These two components are disabled for leisurely driving, by pulling fuse #3 in engine compartment fuse box). The air intake is also modified to a dual filter cold air intake, using Spectre Perfomance HPR 9833 fiters.

Compact mini starter with coil/resistor relay

After my original Bosch starter died, I replaced it years ago with a new one. 5 years later that starter died too. I decided to try a high torque mini starter, partly on the advice of Greg Brown, who said the new or rebuilt Bosch units were no longer reliable, and he has had good luck with these mini starters. The new starters donot have a parallel switch function to pass current to the resistor bypass circuit, which gives slightly increased voltage to the coil during starting. I added a relay which passes current from the engine bay fuse box fuse #6 to the correct resistor. This gives correct voltage to the coil. The mini starter also functions well and also has a DEI heat shield to protect from the nearby exhaust system.

Parallel flow a/c condenser

When the a/c system was converted by me to r134, I changed all tubing, o-rings, receiver dryer and compressor to new compatible items. The general advice with this conversion is to increase condenser capacity. I was able to source a parallel flow unit which fits perfectly, and allows the system to function well.

928 Motorsports aluminum radiator

The original OEM radiator began to leak in a common location where the passenger side plastic end tank seals to the radiator core. I sourced factory parts to have this tank professionall replaced, resealed and tested. Within a years or so, the same problem recurred. For this reason, I purchased the 928 MS aluminum unit. The swap was easy, and performance has been good and leak free.

Relocation of thermo time switch

Due to the location of the supercharger head unit, there was not room for the thermo time switch and connector located at the front of the engine block. This was moved to an accessible location just above the radiator, after plugging the block with a 14 mm. plug. The TT switch now provides a timed cold start but lack engine water temp input. So far this has not been any problem and flooding is prevented properly.

New brown leather and Pascha interior by Classic9 Interiors

I met Rob Bubb, Classic9 owner, at Tim Sassens’ home. We talked about my car. At first I just sent him my pod for recovering in Porsche brown leather. Lather, he did my glove box lid. Then finally I ordered front seats, door inserts in the same leather and black/beige Pascha fabric. I installed the covers myself, with new foam as needed. The back seat is almost never used, so was in new condition, and I left it without Pascha motif altogether. When folded, as it usually is, it is invisible.

Cold air intake for supercharger

Even though there is a water to air intercooler, I wanted to retain the factory cold air intake and apply it to the supercharger intake elbow. Because of the position of the distributor, it is particularly crowed in that area. I have fabricated a dual filter, dual inlet intake using 3” silicone couplings. The filters are Specter HPR 9833 rechargeable type similar to K & N.

Can't believe I'm reading this, and I think based on the current market you're selling yourself way short. I wouldn't take less than $25k for that car. There's a lot of junk for sale between $10-$15k. If I wasn't in the middle of working on this 81 I bought, I would have bought it from you, but I already have more than that in this one and everything still doesn't work and the paint isn't great.

Thanks Pete.
I’m just looking for an easy sale and to leave the enthusiast buyer with $ to work with the car as he wishes.
On eBay I would ask for more.

I get it, but you're going to regret it. I'd just drive it more as you have it perfectly setup for reliability and comfort. GLWS, though you don't need it.

Default Good home for 84

Dave

I am in the market for a 928. I have been looking for about 8 months, this seems like an incredible value. I can schedule a visit this week or next if that is ok for you. I am in Ohio and drive to Illinois and Wisconsin several times a year for work.

Thanks

Curt

BTW the car has about 100K miles, although the speedometer has been replaced from 928Intl and reads maybe 15K miles. Also, car has nice vintage Nakamichi receiver, forgot to mention.

Mike, Way ahead of you... Wish I had $15K laying around... hint... hint... Of course my "finders fee" is a nice bottle of good KY Bourbon or Single Malt Scotch so there's that to look forward to

Curt, You could do a LOT worse... for a LOT more $$... Let me know if you're interested in a PPI for $300... I know a guy.

I had mentioned a paint defect on the aluminum door when I was speaking with Eric. I think I scraped it and painted the area about 10 years ago, and it has remained stable since that time. The squiggly thing above the measuring tape at the 6" mark is attached to the tape, not any part of the car.
