I could not begin to venture a guess on the number remaining. I have been doing the 928 for a mere 15 years or so(nowhere near what some of you have been doing it for). In that time, I have only seen 6 in the wild between two states, Ohio and Florida. I maybe have only seen two of them WHILE driving my 928's. I frequent Porsche shows, and I am almost always the only 928 there.

Where I am starting to notice an apparent decrease in numbers is in the parts cars. I used to meander around Northern Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and a few other states with an SUV and a trailer, snagging up parts off of neglected 928's. I used to find a couple a month. I would go grab the fuel tanks, doors, fog light trim, dials, auto shift handles, etc. Craigslist was full of them. I haven't seen ONE in a year that was worth picking. They have all but dried up. Are others finding them first, or are people starting to restore them? Not sure, but it is depressing.

Same here in Europe. The market is dry and your best bet is someone sell bis Parts Stock because he is too old or leave his hobby.
Early S Engines with the Vakuum controlled ignition are After Vakuum tubes leaks kaputt (broken )

Hey... whatever the number, it's a pretty exclusive club!

Way too many have come to a sad end.
Right.

I'd guess 16,928 survived to 2017 (~~30% loss every decade). Maybe 12,400 remain worldwide (9,400 USA) by the end of 2021. Estimating 9,280 will still be around at the end of 2029 (globally).

Those guesses would be for all non-parts cars (i.e. "someone" has aspirations to make them roadworthy from current projects or they are actually roadworthy already).

We are still finding and rescuing more and more of these on a regular basis and I love to see our forum threads start up with a restore project of one that we find. From basket cases to barn finds this is a group of "never say die" devotees....as these cars continue to become more and more understood and desired I actually expect that number to level off and increase (fully roadworthy cars). I have yet to see a restored one go back to the weeds....they may languish in a garage but as we are also responsible stewards we know when it may be time to say goodbye so the car can continue to be cared for by one of us.

I think if you add in all of the VanD collection they are all accounted for!
