Default Wheel and tire advice? 1985 S.

Good morning, all.

I have recently decided that I can no longer look at the 7-slots on my 1985 car. It presently has the 16x7 stock wheels, and they just do not do it for me, like the dials do. Yes, I know dials are not correct for this car, as they are for my OB cars. I am going to store the slots away, and roll on dials for a while.

I have a set of 16x7 fronts that I know are correct for the front of the car. However, I also have a set of 944 wheels that I can only find ONE solitary reference of them fitting. They are the 8Jx16 ET 52.3 Turbo dials. I have been told by that they will fit the 1985 32V car. I have found one source that says they should fit. https://www.wheel-size.com/size/porsche/928/1985/

Does anyone have 8Jx16's on their car, and do you know if they require spacers if they are 52.3 offset?

Thanks!

Pete does.

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...o-5-speed.html

Spacers won't be needed or wanted. They push the tire out. The lower than ideal ET is already pushing it out.
You may have to roll the fender a bit. Or maybe not.

I love the look of the 951 Phone dials myself, although I prefer the Manhole Covers on the 928. But that's me.

Hi, 8x16 / 52.3 with orig. "S-spacer" (20mm) on my 1984 manual 928S. Perfect fit.

Could you tell me what tires you are running.

A few wheel\tire configurator pages tell me that I should run 245/45 16

My local tire places tells me 225/50 16

Default Early vs Late 944 Phone Dial ET's

Pete ( @Petza914 ) looks to have the "early" 944 8x16 Turbo Phone Dials (stepped lip) in the rear which have the low 20's ET (23.3?) vs. the "late" 944 8x16 Turbo Phone Dials with the 52.3 ET shown above by @bernd93 (non-stepped lip). Thus the difference in whether or not you may want/need spacers.

FYI, if you don't use the spacers you will need open steel Lug nuts, as the 85 - 86.5 have the longer studs

Correct. My rears are 951 Turbo - 8x16 et 23.3 and no need for spacers. I avoid spacers when possible. The Forgelines I removed (currently for sale) did not have spacers so my stud lengths were for a non-spacer setup. I could have done the DRM style spacers where the spacer uses the special nuts that go into the wheel hub pockets and provide new short studs for the wheels to mount to, but wanted this look for this car and it was easier.

Greg, could you please expound on that. I have seen both listed for this wheel.

My wheel part number shows that it came with 225/50's on the 944. Recently, I took off a set of 996 wheels(17x8.5) that had 205's on it.

I am a bit confused. I am taking it in to mount these dials tomorrow. I do have the 20mm 'S' spacers on the car.

That's the size on my rear wheels with 225/50-16 on the 7" fronts. Have virtually the same rolling circumference.

Both sizes fit on an 8" rim, you can go either way, it boils down to personal preference. Most prefer to go with the wider tire.

Have you looked at available tires? The only real issue with 245/45/16 is tire availability.

The The Rack has 5 tires available in 245/45-16 (see image) while there are 41 tires available in 225/50-16

The tire rack will show you what size rim range works with each tire. Here is just one 225/50-16 which is spec'd for 6-8" wheel:

Hacker,

Thank you, kind sir.
I called multiple tire dealers in my area and I received statements ranging from "Wow, is that a funky tire size" to " We have those in our system, but not is stock and can't tell you when" to "There are few options in 16" these days".

I already have the 225's ready to go, and would at least like to use them temporarily.

That absolutely is a concern. I'm running the BF Goodrich Comp 2s and there's a comp 2 AS also, both of rhwuch seem to have good reviews, but I know Hacker is not a fan of the Comp 2s in the rain. I like them in the dry so far and have driven them in light rain, but not heavy rain yet.

I would think the AS may be better in the wet.

You have 245/45-16 Comp 2's? How long ago did you guy those?
