Default How to Re-attach the Fuel Tank Donut/Splash Guard

Hello everyone,

Hope your season is going along well.
MY1981 5-speed
Back story is my tank started leaking at the outlet. The fix is to install the FTTS from Roger.

While installing the Roger fix, I dislodged the yellow donut/splash guard. (BTW, the sleeve installed fine and sealed well). Any ideas how to reattach this donut to the tank bottom? One friend told me to" screw it in place". Sure, right...NOT!!!!

Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.

Well, as you know, those were originally plastic "welded" to the bottom. I have an old tank that I took out of a 1981 parts car, and it had been slashed by the previous owner backing into a piece of rebar sticking out of the ground. So, I cut the tank in half to better inspect how it was made. I have a 1979 tank that the bowl came detached, and I could never come up with a better way to reattach it, however(I will probably get laughed at for this). I have it held in place statically. I used my 12 year old son's skinny arms to reach down inside the clean, dry tank and snap the donut cover back on to the bowl, as mine had come apart and was in two pieces. We lined the bowl up with the sending unit and it sinks right down into the center of the bowl. The tank strainer holds the bowl perfectly into rotational position. After 3 years of driving the car, nearly DAILY. I have had not one single problem with noise, movement of the bowl, fuel starvation, smells, or leakage from the strainer gasket. NOTHING. I have a spare tank with intact bowl in my garage and told myself that I would put it in, if I had any problems. Three years later, and I forgot that I ever had fuel issues.

A lot have become detached and most owners would not know that. Just leave it in position and it will be fine.
