Looks like case almost closed on this.

With 1A Parking fuse pulled the motor operates only when pull switch activated, so I have a replacement transistor on way and will test the one on the board asap.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll post final result when transistor replaced.

Transistors (bought a couple) arrived today and now the hatch motor stops very sharply! Very pleased with fix. It's actually fiddlier than I thought as the transistor is soldered onto top of board, and has to be mounted very low to allow clearance for the plastic gear wheel just above,

Now I know it works I'm going to clean off old grease and regrease with something suitable for plastic..

On my MY91 it’s position 26 on the CE fuse panel.

The transistor I replaced is testing ok, so it’s baffling why it wasn’t working on the board. Maybe a cold solder joint? Maybe one of track contacts had speck of dirt that dropped off?

Could have been a cold solder joint, but there's not a lot of weight hanging off it to produce the typical hairline cracks.

Still, I'd replace that diode too while I was in there....

I know there’s no weight on solder joints so no idea what happened. Anyway all buttoned up now so if diode fails in future will be very fast to remove motor and disassemble.

It is also Fuse #26 on a 1986 - it is possible it might have been replaced with a 3A as many have been - 1A fuses are very hard to find in retail. If any of you with 1985 & later cars have any 3A fuses installed these are not a stock valve.
They will usually have been installed only for the hatch motor for this availability reason - usually this implies someone has worked on the hatch motor before.
