Swapped the '81 for an '84 Euro S Roger Box
Starting a new thread based on this past Friday's activities... Joel and I traded cars - he took my 'cash and my 81 Euro S 5-speed to have something a little less nice and fun to drive that he could use more regularly than his exquisite '84 Euro S Auto, which I decided I had to have when he offered it up for sale.
Now his
and now mine
It seems to be a very well sorted car, but per my usual, I'll be making some changes. On the current project list:
There are a few mechanical items I need to get to eventually also.
Much of the above was disclosed pre-sale and I did the same for Joel on "nuances" of the '81 he was getting. I'm super excited to have this car and have loved the look of it since first seeing it at SITM a few years ago, then again at this past Frenzy. The above stuff is very minor and the car ran and drove perfectly on my 6 hour trip home. I'm learning to properly use the Roger-box 4-speed and this car does have the shift button kickdown relay modification, which I think adds quite a lot to it's performance drivability. It's a superb high-speed distance cruiser and the automatic fits that use case quite well.
I now have 2 very nice and very different 928s - a manual, supercharged, convertible and an auto, NA (best 16v twin-dizzy motor), non-sunroof coupe. Stay tuned for updates as I work through my repair and update projects!

It seems to be a very well sorted car, but per my usual, I'll be making some changes. On the current project list:
- Change the in-dash receiver to something that looks a bit more subtle, has native BT streaming capability than the current Alpine with the bright colors. Current contenders are the Blaupunkt Bremen and a Rockford Fosgate unit made for Harley Motorcycles. I'll be leaving the rest of the awesome sound system alone - just changing the user interface.
- I'll be doing the same type of high-speed USB charger port conversion with the USB lead for the stereo in the ashtray that I did on the 81 - that worked great
- Need to add auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink, hardwire for mirror mounted radar detector, an inside the windshield FM radio antenna (have 1 in the Spyder) since the power antenna at the rear quarter has been removed and filled to make the smooth exterior look (no rub strips, no sunroof, no side markers, etc) - that is one of the most attractive things about the way this car was done!
- Clear side markers at the front corners with LED lighting conversion in the H4, fog, and aux high beams like I've done to my previous 928s.
- Need to create some smoked Plexiglass covers to cover the amps. When driving at night with the mirror in night mode to minimize vehicle headlights behind you, the blue accent amp surrounds tint everything in the mirror blue. I'll be doing something cool with this so they're easily removable when at a show
- Need to add a remote door lock and hatch release. that's an awesome feature on both my other 928s and will allow me to drop one key from the key ring for this car. Currently, the doors use one key, the ignition another, and the hatch a 3rd.
- Not a fan of the square digital console clock - need to do something there with an analog version that fits the space
There are a few mechanical items I need to get to eventually also.
- Have a very slight coolant weep out the top of the water bridge from the large o-ring that's there. Going to run a 13 psi reservoir cap and see if the 1.7 psi difference from the stock 1 bar Behr cap makes it even less or go away. I ran that same cap on the '81 Euro and run a 10 psi version on the Spyder because of the water bridge flange issue on that car from a PO's welded head repair that warped the mating surface a bit.
- Brakes have some shudder when applied lightly. At some point I'll probably install all new rotors and pads and at that time paint the calipers to match or complement the bronze exterior car color
- Have some electrical weirdness to sort out as well
- Passenger side running light doesn't work. Bulb is good, socket has a good ground, but power to the socket terminal fluctuates from about 3v-8v and never goes to 12v. (may be taking a look at that today)
- The Rear Euro fog light is wired to the driver's side taillights so doesn't operate independently with the rear fog light POD switch
- Key off turn signal activation lights the proper rear light on each side, but the front auxiliary high beam in the bumper instead of the corner light. Odd because the turn signals when used work correctly
- Both power windows are operable even without the key on - this might just be a bad relay, although I have to say I may not hate that "feature" when sitting in the school pickup line with the car off or turning off the car and having forgotten to close one of the windows. If the relay fixes it, I will keep the bad one I remove and label it with the always on window feature.
- Transmission pan has a small leak (knew about this going in). May try to figure out how to modify a new Mercedes pan to address this at a reasonable cost
- Stereo system occasionally makes a pop sound. I'll check the grounds and other wiring as I work on the Plexiglass shields project as it may be a loose ground or amp connection.

Stunning car, congratulations!
If the window relay is stuck closed it runs power through it even if you aren't using windows. Running both windows up and down at the same time can stress it; esp. if original...I had window relay that stuck "closed" ...its plenty warm if it is stuck...

Spent some time with my new girlfriend today.
1st order of business was to replace the aluminum lug nuts and black plastic caps with Titanium ones like I run on all the other Porsches.
Wheel lugs with black plastic caps
Ti lugs instslled. Go great with the polished barrels
Fronts are normal straight replacements.
Installed a quick connect for the Battery Tender using the jump post under the hood and s fender mounting bolt as a ground. I had the tender hooked to the jump post and a ground with alligator clips previously and it went fully charged very quickly, but this new setup is still showing charging after a couple hours so I'm thinking the ground point isn't sufficient and I'll have to do something else. Too bad because this is inconspicuous and handy.
Rears because of the long studs have opened ended ones holding the wheels and them the prett Ti ones as decorative caps.
Next was an oil change, but spent some time underneath looking around.
Normal Driver's side cam tower oil leak
Same on passenger side
Oil pressure sender appears to have a leak and filled the terminal boots with oil. While doing the oil change today, removed that and reinstalled with a new bonded sealing washer. Of course I reversed the wires to the terminals the first time since the aftermarket harness has the same size terminal rings on it, so got pressure warning flashing light. Swapped them back and all good now.
Rear transmission leaks. Looks like some fluid around this.assembly or seal, whatever it is that drips through the grate. This looks like a separate leak from the pan weeping. Ideas?
Dirty fluid residue around this trans hose fitting too
Reservoir dirty too, as expected from the fluid that leaks spraying around from the wind.
Opposite side of reservoir
Looks like maybe there was a seal between this housing and the starter bracket at some point. I've nat had a setup like this before as both my other cars, being manuals, had the starter mounted to the lower bell housing.
Installed a Fumto drain valve I have had for years that never fit any of my other oil pans. This will make futir changes cleaner and easier. Also toes up the low hanging startwr wire bundle to protect it from road debris.
Well begin is half done !

Hi Pete,
Remember the euro windows are supposed to work with key off and I believe door open. I can probably find that in the literature if you need it.
The logic is if car is parked windows down, and it rains, that you can open door in a downpour and operate window quickly without struggling with key.
USA version doesnt have this feature.

It is definitely dangerous. On our former 84 euro, the grey car in avatar, I got my hand crunched pretty well by a kid sitting in the drivers seat while I was holding door open, by the top of the glass, with window down a couple inches.
Works sort of opposite from 85/6 USA, where windows operate with key off, door closed (at least until you open the door once after driving).

Replaced the disconnected carbon fuel vent canister with the rotten lines with simple air filter like I did on the 81. The 81 had a line that ran from that metal pipe all the way back to the front of the car to some other type of canister that had since been removed, so was just a really long rubber hose to nowhere. They did some crazy stuff during Federalization of these Euros.
If someone has a concourse Euro and needs this rear canister, let me know.
