Well, I made it home and pulled the climate fan. Not too hard, and sure enough the fan had seized and spun the lower bearing. Took it apart, cleared the bearing, cleaned up the axle, re-greasedb and it's working perfectly. A nice 36 degrees from 30 ounces of R134 in the system.

Moral: These motors can be overhauled. Really recommend doing it before they seize up, details are on another 928 site to maintain my rights to republish.
