Tim - if your shark is coughing at 4k - you DO have a problem. Both of my sharks pull clean and hard up to the Rev limiter. Sart with the usual stuff such as an oil change - plugs - caps and rotors (not crossed with the 944 - as far as I know of - maybe a 911) - maybe plug wires.

I'm no expert but these are the items I would start with. Then, I would go and do the required maintenance on the water pump, rollers etc and ensure all three ppoints are lined up for proper timing.

Welcome to the looney Bin!

Anyhow, I plan to have the injectors cleaned and balanced (I'll BG44K them in the meantime) and I'm on the lookout for a good shop to do the exhaust. Who knows, maybe the folks at Exotic Moterwerks can point me in the right direction

Tim - in the same parking lot - spitting distance from Exotics front door is Scottsdale Muffler - they do great work at a reasonable price

Tim,
An injector ultrasonic clean is a good idea, my car respsonded well to this.

The S2 is very sensitive to MAF ageing, much more so than the later cars.

It should pull hard at medium throttle openings/rpm. If it tends to get on the power only when the WOT switch opens, then a aged MAf is a likely candidate.

Congrats! Here's an easy check for clogged exhaust: Hook a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum. Wrap the RPM up to ~4500 RPM. If the vacuum increases with the engine held at a steady RPM, you have a clogged cat or muffler.

Tim,
Congrats man!
It is good to see such a rare car in the hands of a true enthusiast.

I may be able to help you with an exhaust system as I have a nice one available (link on my signature). If you are looking to stick with the stock type dual system, then you may be alright replacing the cats with some freer flowing ones. Also, I believe you have the cast manifolds. You may want to consider going to the 85-86 US tubular SS manifolds (headers). That'll help open it up.

If the power is falling off around 4K, it's probably your exhaust. My '85 Euro did the same thing with the single-pipe/cat '84 system it came with. A quick fix is to use a complete '85-'86 twin pipe system including the twin cats. The car will be a lot happier with this setup, and it's available used pretty cheaply. The car really likes the Euro front resonator in place of the cat, but they're pretty hard to come by.

Tim, it was very nice to have met you. The BBQ will be much different upon your next arrival to Austin, and with out the circumstances as the last. My hat is off to you and what you do.

Thanks Matt,

I appreciated the hospitality to be sure, and I'm looking forward to having the time and a good excuse to head out that way again. I'm sure we'll come up with something.

For the rest, I wouldn't say it's falling off at 4k, more like there is moderate acceleration to that point and then theres a wall. The engine revs hard enough, but it's not pulling like I figured it would. I'll be the exahust is the culprit as the restricted flow would seriously hinder higher RPM performance which this car should excel at.

Drew...the cap and rotor have 944 part numbers, and since when in recent history did a 911 ever have cylinders in multiples of four? Sorry man, had to bust your chops for that one...all in good humor of course. I'm really looking forward to meeting some fellow sharkers next month. I'll check out the exhaust shop you talk about, if for nothing else, to get some ideas.

Theres only one guy down here that I've talked to and he's a user not an enthusiast. I ran accross a middle eastern gentelman who reportedly has two, a black 86 Auto and a red one of unkown year/type. I've seen a nice oldish white one on the U of A campus, a red one with anodized wheels on Davis-Mothan AFB, my two, and Scott Turnbull is supposed to be arround here somewhere. Last but not least, I blasted by a Bluegrey Metallic S4/GT a few months back, but never saw it again. What I'm getting at is that despite all the sharks in the pond, I'm having a heck of a time hooking up with the right crowd.

Tim . . . Thanks for the hook up. Keith gave me BK's # here in dallas and the Shark goes in this weekend. After that it's up to me to learn about it & maintain it myself. The funds from the sale of my 78' Trans Am are almost dwindled away. To me, this is the best money spent. I'm looking forward to the Wichta get-together. Thanks again . . . Ron

You are correct that those 911 engines are 6 cylinders, but you're not quite correct diss'n Drew on this topic. The two capped distributor was actually developed for the 911s that sport two spark plugs per cylinder, however those engines fire both plugs at the same time.

Tim - IAG no worries man.

Theres a cat that works for Ratheon who owns a 84 Black/Tan Auto - send me a PM and I'll forward his email address on. He's been looking for fellow owners in Tuscon.

Rich - thanks for the info - good stuff.

Rich I still don't get how you'd fire off a 4 terminal distributor. Unless of course it had three caps, which would be consistent with German over engineering.

In the interest of not hijacking my own post, I'll just say that I am aware of the double plug thingy and that the 911 (naturally) benefited from it as well as the 928.

Drew, I'll PM you here in a minute. Incidently, I saw another shark today, at the Earl Scheib paint shop near my house. It's owned by an asian gentelman who just had it repainted from silver to dark blue. It looks alright, but it's not the direction I'd go in arround here. That brings the tally up to....9 (had to think hard). Not bad for this little cow town.

I was wondering if anyone had pictures of the orignal exhaust. Even better, does anyone know how to get the owners manual for these cars?

About the cooling issue... I keep hearing about electric fans for the ol shark. Anyone know the best way to go with these? I'd like to have the car running as cool as possible, given the climate.

Drew since your mailbox is full....

Hi Drew,

I was hoping you'd send me that info about the local guy looking to get the club started. I haven't been to a meeting yet, but if Panorama reflects PCA at large, we're screwed! It'd be nice to have a support group for this addiction, and those 928 junkies don't understand.

I didn't know there was a Rev-limiter on these cars...interesting.

By the by, how is it that you came to own two of these fine machines (the Euro S I mean) I had a heck of a time finding this one.
