First Impressions: The 1985 Euro S
Hi all, I just got my baby home from Dallas so I thought I'd share a few impressions from the trip.
1. Veeery nice! Indischrot is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. The interior is in excellent condition, a few little things notwithstanding. Dark tint looks good.
2. Minor issues (I hope) including the reverse light/mirror motr fuse popping twice, the AC working great on day one but not at all on day two, and the cruise control having control but not cruising too well, tape deck is nogo, rear seatbelts don't seem to work.
3. Major issues include a cooling problem (related to fan clutch I think), the speedo is miscalibrated (reads 10 MPH low), fuel gauge reads 1/4 tank low, and the tachometer has intermittent failure to operate (loose connection).
4. Pleasent Surprises: still gets over 20 to the gallon at 85MPH, Stereo sounds good, almost all the accesories were included.
5. Unpleasent Surprises: You'd think a car with 50% more horsepower would haul a lot more ***...where's the monster at guys? My bet's in the exhaust (federalised).
Overall, I'm impressed and chagrined. I wish I had foound this car the first time.
I have to put in a bid for the person I bought it from. Keith was very professional and knowledgeable. He also made more than a few concessions in my favor regarding making things right on the car before I left. For instance, he had the wheel locks removed and gave me his own lugnuts as replacements, gave me the lug wrench from his car, and put me up at his house (free beer and chow...good to go) overnight. He was very concerned about customer satisfaction, Texas Barbercue notwithstanding (just kidding, it was great!).
I would deal with him again in a heartbeat and I know he's got a few more for sale in Dallas. One is the Ultra-Blue 81 with the matching interior. I didn't have time to check it out, but if it's half as good as this one you won't go wrong.
I'll change my signature when I can think straight.
Guten Abend alles!

Just tallied up the cost of the drive.
Dallas to Tucson $117 in premium petroleum products (Shell,Chevron, or Texaco only)
Figure about 45 gallons burned, not bad for the trip. I also filled up from below half in Dallas (test drive) and again when I got home.
I'm pleased

Tim-
The S2 is a finicky car. Minor vacuum leaks, a fouled plug, clogged injector, or a bad connection between the brain and a sensor can loose you far more power in one of these than an S4 or a GT. These are high-winding engines that depend on their cams...and state of tune.
Trust me- do a good, comprehensive tune up on that car, and pull the nasty exhaust. Then hold on tight....

Drewster, I already RSVP'd. My wife will be coming with me as well. With a little luck I'll have the few things I can take care of ironed out.
Normy, I've just ordered most of the stuff I need for a comprehensive tuneup from the guys at 928 Intl. I couldn't help but notice the striking similarity of the rotor cap to the 944 variety of the same year. I wonder if they are the same.
Anyhow, I plan to have the injectors cleaned and balanced (I'll BG44K them in the meantime) and I'm on the lookout for a good shop to do the exhaust. Who knows, maybe the folks at Exotic Moterwerks can point me in the right direction.
I'll check her over thoutoughly, and this tech session will help me by having another set of eyes (and seat of pants) to help me diagnose the problem if there is one. I believe the exhaust is to blame simply because there's a distinct feeling of 'choke' above 4000 RPM, where there ought to be a bit of a kick if I read the sheets right.
Normy, do you know where I can get an owners manual for these cars? I don't care what language, though German or English is preferred.

Yup, I think that the best "upgrade" that you can do to this car is a good tune up. Driving around town, it might actually feel slower than the US version. This is because all the power is over 3,500rpm. Over 3,500rpm, it should charge REALLY hard to it's red line....

I drove all the way from Dallas to Tucson and opened it up a few times on the way. Nothing to write home about, but it was good for something like 140mph before I started to get nervous about that glint of light on speedtrap in the distance. Anyhow, I know you are right. The power is there.

Tim, thanks for the running update ... I live vicariously through it, as I of course was inches from clicking "buy now" .... Get her sorted. Are we meeting you at Wichita for the OC convention? I would love to see this beauty in person.
All the best,
Heinrich

Alas, not this year Heinrich. My responsibilities here and abroad interfere. However, I will be looking forward to the chance to meet you all whenever I stop having to run arround like a crazy man. College life isn't as easy as they said itwas that's for sure. Of course, the Marine Corps isn't as hard as they said it was. I guess it balances out.
Anyone have any thoughts on replacing the front spoiler. I'd like to, but it's almost like I know I'm going to rip it off again.

Tim, Congrats on the Shark. I too have a few bug problems I need to iron out. My problem is the car seems to be getting to much gas under 4K, after that, it's hold on. Is that chugging problem fuel related?

I'm not familiar with the K-Jet system. I know if it was L-Jet or LH-Jet I'd say it was related to your throttle position switches on the throttle body. Your mixture could be very rich all around, but would tend to lean out slightly above 4k. I'd search the forum, or give Keith a call in Dallas (214) 566-6390. I can't vouch for his 928 savvy, but I'm sure he could point you in the right direction.
Of course the solution is simple, drive really fast all the time. Kinda like "Doc it hurts when I move my arm like this", "Then don't move your arm like that"

Noted.
I have a similar "aftermarket" spolier setup on Inga, though I don't think it does much for aerodynamics.
It's amazing to see just how far behind one car is when you have a more complete one to compare it to. Humbling really
