I put a JVC KDC-AVX77 with CD player into my 79 as I wanted a screen for the backup camera I also installed. Put a Sony DSX-GS80 into an 81 and have a Pioneer DEH-80PRS with CD in my 84 Euro. You can look up the depth specs on these to see what they were for reference.

My 86.5 came with an amazing Alpine CDA 7949, a early 2000's Copper chassis, top competition single CD player head unit 150mm deep.( Still available pre owned) I don't care about streaming,I want top quality fidelity from my CD collection. Add quality ADS separates and a 5 channel amplifier and you'll be in audiophile heaven!
FYI, you shouldn't need any kind of adaptor for the antenna when installing the Conti radios, or at least I didn't. the antenna connection you see in this photo is actually an adaptor itself and can be pulled out to expose the standard male antenna plug in the back of the radio.

A media player, that plays no media other than Radio but has RCA in, it was used for DVD player that was in the rear centre console with Screen in Glove box
Huge amp and huge sub in spare wheel
I've ripped it all out, hence being able to take picture behind it
If you need any more info of whats behind the radio, let know, its all apart but not for long

Any opinions on sound quality? From what little info I can find, I see it does have RCA outputs. Is there a setting in the menu to configure them for sub control?

Those work ok except in populated areas where there's a radio station every frequency and then you get feedback from the FM station and when travelling have to find different uncluttered frequencies as you go. Fidelity isn't the same as a direct BT or aux connection but you'll be able to hear your music

I agree with Petza, but I will add the fidelity is terrible quality, better than nothing I guess!

For $5/month I listen to a portable Sirius XM radio that is transferable to other vehicles for a long trip
It is velcroed to the passenger shelf and comes with a remote to change channels. Perfect setting.
I Bluetooth stream Pandora, Spotify, and my directions via Waze 95% of the time, but still occasionally listen to some local FM stations or stream FM stations from other areas that are good.
Just because no one is listening anymore doesn't mean the stations aren't still there cluttering up the frequencies, but if you're in a rural area, that FM modulator should work fine.
Hi everyone, I’m the OP from awhile back and was hoping to get some additional assistance. I ended up putting in the correct factory radio for my ‘79. It looks great but obviously we can’t listen through the phone. During the interior restoration, they tried to install a Bluetooth amp but kept getting feedback through the speakers. They couldn’t get the grounding issue figured out so they abandoned that part of the project. I just tried to use an avantee fm transmitter but even with a good “open” frequency, the quality didn’t sound all that great and crackled a bit. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations? The FM transmitter is not wired-in. It is completely wireless and actually can be operated just off the battery of the transmitter itself, or plugged into a usb port (wired in inside the cassette console. The speakers are pioneer 30 watt nominal, 200 watt max. Would these need an amp to function properly? Anyway, thanks for any help you can provide.
How did they "try" to install a bluetooth amp during the restoration? External DIN-connected? Hardwired internally? Does the speaker outlets on the backside of the stereo work?
The FM-transmitters are not a great solution. I have tried a lot of those and In my opinion, regardless of the variant of FM-sender, they will never sound as good as a real low-level inlet or a very good quality bluetooth transmitter.
That Porsche CR blaupunkt stereo is identical to the model "Bamberg" from the late 70s or early 80s. I may have a schematic on that one, maybe we can work something out? Do you have more pictures of the backside of the stereo?
