My 21k mile mocha 1981 5-speed going on BAT
Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've posted here... Thought I'd let everyone know that I am listing my 81 on BAT in a couple weeks. I've owned this 928 for 6 years and am the 3rd owner. Pics, videos and history have all been submitted to BAT and approved.
Over the course of the last few months I've spent much time, effort and as you would expect dollars getting it ready. It's finally to a point where I am very happy with how the car presents itself. I have gone thru it and fixed, replaced and cleaned everything that needed attention.

What a lovely car, with excellent caretaking. GLWTA, as they say over on BaT.
Can I ask what the little shock absorber looking thing is that's attached to the LCA bracket?
Cheers

@Chuck Z : Thanks for the education, I'd never seen that before and always assumed that hole in the LCA bracket was just used for the underbody panel, somehow (my car is missing it, so I've never investigated it much). I'll go explore PET and educate myself further; I like the idea of little shock absorbers, but it seems Porsche moved away from them on the engine and transmission so, presumably, they had good reasons, but I still like the concept.
Cheers

Wow! Very, very nice! Well taken care of and looks very original.
May I ask where you got your mats from or are those the originals? Noticed the little bag with mat hold-down instructions so thought you had perhaps purchased the mats recently. I have an '82 with the same color interior and have been looking for really good mats but have not found any I like.
Thx, Ernie

Incredible Chuck! I love Mocha Brown 928s. Underrated color that is easily in my top 5 for our cars. Did you have the undercarriage dry ice cleaned? Looks immaculate. One of the cleanest I've seen. GLWTA!

I would love to have this group offer any feedback and/or ask questions in anticipation of what might be asked or commented about on the BAT auction.
I've tried to be proactive and have the car in a condition representative of the mileage.
TIA
[edit] - aluminum ball joints have been replaced with steel ball joints and alignment done.
I've tried to be proactive and have the car in a condition representative of the mileage.
- I've owned the car for 6 years
- I bought it from the second owners estate in 2016
- Second owner passed away in 2014
- I bought it from the second owners estate in 2016
- The paint is all original - have paint meter pics to verify
- Has a few repair rock chips and some very minor scratches that are impossible to photograph
- Fairly complete records although there are none from the 1st owner (except the window sticker, Bill of Sale and some rust proofing he had done) and the records for the second owner are hand written
- The second owner was an engineer and did brakes and fluid changes/flushes himself
- With just 21k miles, to the best of my knowledge, the car hasn't needed much in terms of maintenance or repairs over the years
- The second owner was an engineer and did brakes and fluid changes/flushes himself
- All service is up to date. I had a PK tensioner installed even tho this is a non interference motor
- Had the t-belt/water pump service done proactively with under 1k miles since the last I did 6 years ago
- Less than 1k miles bc I moved from Charlotte to Chicago 4 years ago and the car stayed in Charlotte for 2+ years until I had a place for it
- Had the t-belt/water pump service done proactively with under 1k miles since the last I did 6 years ago
- Had the compression checked and all cylinders at 155+ in all
- No fluid leaks whatsoever
- Most everything on the car is in working order except the light on the radio and the right side mirror doesn't respond (will fix this prior to sale)
- I had to have the trans removed and the reverse gears replaced (Thanks Mark Anderson, you're the best!) bc I'm speculating the transport company went from 1st to reverse and chewed up the reverse gear set.
- While this was being done I had the reverse lockout from later models installed to prevent this for future owner(s)
- Shifts as smooth as any manual trans in an early 928 will ever shift
- Yellow handle screw driver is missing
- I have the original 16" phone dials on what appear to be original tires (or, very old P7s)
- Bought a set of refinished wheels from Jim Doerr and installed a 25mm spacer on the rears
TIA

I did have the underside dry ice blasted. The company that did the work said it was absolutely the best result they've ever seen... Looks like a brand new 42 yo 928 underneath.
Here's the link to before and after the dry ice cleaning. Pretty remarkable...

- DME report?
- IMS?
- Bore scoring/D-chunk?
- cold start/driving video?
- etc
This car is exceptional. If any idiots show up with stupid questions or comments, we'll rick-roll them out the door.
