928 vs Harley-Davidson
Morning Chaps, (catchy title but not irrelevant ..see below)
New (or looking to join) @ the 928 community. I have the opportunity at trading one of my Harley for a 1981 928 5s.Since the car have the spoilers on, i need to find if it a US or ROW car at my next visit. The car will need a respray , a notorious dash job and the whole TB job (one of the roller is ''singing'' it's way to retirement..).We are talking 7500$ material here (10K$ cdn). I will do all the work myself. Not fairly a noob either as i currently own a race 944 that i do ALL the mechanical work on from changing tires to full engine rebuilt. Changed the clutch on it , so yeah i've earned my wings (those who knows ,knows).
My question is, in the likely event that it is a US car (lower hp) will l be bored with it quickly or it can be enjoyable to do what it is intended to do: cruising twisting roads, long highway cruiser and enjoy the V8..(yes i will upgrade the xhaust just for the melody..Ü). My SP2 944 car is the dedicated one for getting the blood pressure going (that and wifey on some given days). Also l have been reading on it and they seems to be fairly reliable engine besides some electrical gremlins
Also the seats on it are not the regulars one with the larger '' rectangular bread pans'' but looks like 911 or 944 smaller ribs on it. At first l was under the impression that they were interchanged but the back are matching , so it had to came out of factory. Right?
That for all your knowledge and input (can share knowledge back on various subject: Building envelope, sailboats, hockey, 944 and on my upcoming book: ''How to ignore your wife's request and demands without altering your sex life.. Best seller for sure Ü . Can't wait to sit down with Oprah and the crew at The View...
Cheers.

I could bang on for hours on why money is important. But one example is that you may be able to sell your bike in an area or to someone in an area where it's worth more. And then you may be able to purchase your 928 at a place or time where it costs less. Trading does not allow for that and inevitably advantages one side and that creates problems. Society has progressed and gave up bartering hundreds of years ago. The disadvantages to bartering are enormous. Bartering can Advantage one side or the other that seldom creates equity because two individuals almost never have exactly the needs of the other at one particular time.
That said... the 81's lack the simple Elegance of the earlier cars and don't have the performance and sophistication of 928 models that came just a few years later.

Yeah, without pics and details on maintenance, I agree up front with ICS. Don't make the trade. Unless your Harley is a project; I recommend you sell the bike for your best money and then start shopping.

Thanks for the reply.
I am earing what both of you are saying but i belive that it would be a good transaction for me. My Harley ain't a project. Perfectly running 2008 Dyna Super glide (road by my dad before and now the wife. After seeing Elvis in a close call this summer, i decide to get off the motorcycle game for a while..). These can be had at around 4500 to 6000K (low mileage/garage Queen, posers bike**). The Harley market is going down by the day (DAMHIK) and the 928 one is at worst stable. Back in 2009 l hesitated between a ¨Porsche 911 SC (early to mid 80's) and a HD Electra glide. Had a budget of +/- 25K. Pick the HD. Now this bike (RIP) would worth around 8K$ (at best) and my stomach hurts just thinking what the 911 is at.. Not doing this for investment but for the fun of the car. Goes without saying that it will be a week-ender to go at the sailboat or get an ice cream. Long story short i would have the best end of the stick if the deal goes through. Also, If i sell it by myself and use the money to buy the car, the taxes (15.5%) would apply on the market value or amount of the transaction (higher of the 2) . I live in an area where the government make the mob shylock look like reasonable people to do business with..)

Looks like a decent car. Yes Harleys are depreciating like crazy.. I am not opposed to a trade. Sometimes they are destiny. Maintenance is pretty easy on the 928s from my standpoint. No more difficult than a 944 but there is twi e as many parts to replace so the expense is there for sure.

Looks like a US delivery competition package car. Those are sport seats …pretty nice too, and S spoilers would have been part of the competition package. This is not exactly a “common” 928. Run the vin in the vin check thread.

Love the sport seats!
5-Speed, Competition Package, looks straight and fairly unmolested.
This thing is a million times safer than that Harley so that should score some points from the wifey?
Plus you are not a newb with a wrench!
Do it!

That's not the high compression, 300 HP motor unless someone swapped it into a different car. The car isn't a Euro model because the side marker is in front of the front wheel not behind it and the headlights have the US chrome rings around them - otherwise they'd be 8" with no ring around them. If you want that engine, you need an M28-11 (manual) or 12 (auto) or an M28-21 (manual) or 22 (auto)
I'll probably get flamed for this, but I'd you race 944s, you're not going to be impressed by a regular US model 928 of that vintage. Yes, it will be very fast and smooth on the highway once you get it up to speed, but it's not going to have much grunt. I have a 79 with the 4.5L 229 HP engine that is supercharged and I've driven it with the supercharger removed and it's nice, but it's not exciting - let's just say the car is much more fun car with 350 HP than the 229 HP. My other two have been the 4.7 L Euro S high compression models (have an 84 twin dizzy one of these currently and an 81 before it) and they're awesome - kind of a night and day difference. The Euro S cars run with the S4s - the others don't really. Had an impromptu proving out of this just last week at Frenzy when Joel in his 996, Mike G in his S4, and me in my 84 split off from the group at the end of the fun run
Take all of this with a grain of salt though as I have a 485 HP RWD RUF 997 and a 650 HP Cayenne Turbo S so my benchmarks may be skewed vs other 928 owners.
That does look like a nice car though so as long as you go in with the right expectation, could be a good swap.

I would venture a guess you not gonna find a nicer car in your neck of the woods,
where a swap of property will put it in your driveway.
That is plenty of car for anyone,
and it appears to be in nice enough condition to continue taking proper care of it.
If it was me,
I would already have put that car up on jack stands in my driveway to go through it.
