I think I have one, but couldn't make it function properly with the linear actialtion it does. Ended up juatnintllingnthe proper roatry motor and triggering it from my keyless entry system and it works perfectly.

specifically, posts 124 for the power door locks and post 133 for the rear hatch release. Going to put the same kit and setup into the 944 S2 we just bought for my son - works fantastic. His will be easier because he already has a power hatch release that I can just tie the wiring into - my 84 didn't have it.
The rear hatch motor runs in a circle to cycle the gold arm on it properly. It works by pushing the tap connected to the arm into the white spring loaded piece on the male top portion of the latch, causing it to release. I tried a linear actuator on my 81 and never got it to work. When the arm and latch are in the proper position for the hatch to close, the gold tab should be hidden or the hatch latch won't catch.

I didn't find the VW unit to be difficult to get working - though you do need some adaptations to fit (it is not plug & play electrically or mechanically). I do however find the stock units to be absolute crap (and of course expensive, noisy and slow). Long long ago I got mine working with my KE unit (that part is relatively easy). I persevered with the stock unit for a long time, adjusting, cleaning, repairing, improving and even replacing once. It never stayed working reliably for much more than 2 years. Eventually I was tired of the amount of energy and grief this crap system gave me and replaced it with an inverted VW (pusher type) module. It has never failed since - so much more reliable, quieter, much quicker and a fraction of the price.YMMV!

It also looks to me like the door lock unit is the same as the trunk release motor, just mounted differently, so if upgrading the doors to the linear actuators in the Amazon kits like I did, you'd have a spare hatch actuator motor or two. Usually the rotating gear in one of the door ones fails, but with 2 to choose from, you might find a working one for the hatch.
I've not compared the part numbers though, so maybe they look similar but are actually different.

I have 2, and neither have the part numbers you seek, sorry.

Thanks for looking U-928.
Alan, I have a '3A0-959-781' I bought in desperation because it looks like the 1H5. cost me a fortune by the time it reached 'down under' and then the little button that hooks to the rod was broken off!
It works thought, backwards. Same dimensions and connections, so it bolts straight onto my modded setup but it is a puller?
I contacted the local VW dealers and they took my details, called me back 2 days later asking 'again' for the car's VIN, which of course I don't have. They said they would get back to me. I got an email asking a third time for the VIN, I replied again I don't have it. No more contact!
I'll look at the 3B0 959 781 A.
Thanks guys.

To summarize, is the 3B0 959 781 A a direct replacement or do modifications need to happen?
