Default 1983 928 Auto leak

Hey all,
need some more expert eyes on this one. Have a leak at the torque converter. Pours out especially on startup. Talked to Roger, he sent me a new torque converter gasket. Installed it, leak seemed to go away, but it’s either back or never left. Where else could it pour from?!?

There are multiple gaskets there with 1, 3, and 10 being your main culprits for leaks

You can get the part numbers here: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=308-15

Order them from your favorite 928 suppliers

Otherwise you are going to have to remove that front cover to replace all of them aside from that one center seal.

Thanks. Replaced 1, will do 3(it didn’t look likely), 10 seems to be sketchy.

Seems fixable. How is the rest of the project going? Did you get to do some test / tune before discovering the leak? Starting problem was bad LJet box, right?

BTW, thanks sending those test parts back.

hey man!
The rest is pretty good. Actually have it up for sale now that that it “was” drivable. Problem did end up being the LJet. I’ve been driving it pretty regularly, just don’t like leaving transmission blood everywhere.

the leak is usually the pump O ring use DC111 on the O ring..
put vaseline on the snout of the TC so it wont burn up the bronze bushing

Got it put back together well enough to test it. Still leaks. Is there anything extra that would cause the torque converter seal to leak? (Torque converter not seated, not sealing?!?) It’s brand new, installed flush. See pics. It’s very hard to see where the leak is when the torque converter is installed.

have replaced 1, 3 and 10.

@Mrmerlin Can you clarify where the bronze bushing is? I dont remember seeing a bronze bushing near the snout. Snout toward the transmission? toward the torque tube? is it in the diagram? I didnt assemble anything back dry except #10.

the rear end of the snout of the torque converter slides into the front pump then centers on a bronze bushing,
look inside the front pump after the TC has been removed

Some more pictures of the leak as it’s assembled. Couldn’t really get a clear and lit shot.

A little more history is required. When did the leak start? Did oil get low? did you replace the converter? is there unusual wear/scratches on the converter neck? did the converter feel tight after insertion to the transmission. Should spin but not be sloppy. Obviously you have experience with transmissions to take this on.

I noticed it after changing the filter and pan gasket. Color looked good so I didn't do a full flush at that time. I didn't drive it much after discovering the leak, but the level got slightly below the "cold" line before I'd fill it up. I believe I did overfill it(why I thought it was leaking to begin with) by not cracking the cap on the reservoir. Has a new gasket on the TC neck and on the pump o-ring.
Did not replace the converter, does not seem to have excessive wear on the neck. Still feels "solid" when I put it in both times. Had to fight a little to get it fully engaged, but may have just been due to working under the car. Spins fine, can feel the pump meshing.

P.S. Didnt know Toccoa people knew what a Porsche was(joking). I'm through there quite often on 17.

@Mrmerlin found the brass bushing you were referring to. TC side looks good. Not sure about the pump side. How tight should it be? If there is too much slip in this bearing, I can see how the weight could deform the axial seal of the TC snout.

your bearing looks OK and old,
just put a smear of vaseline on it before you insert the TC,
so it wont seize before the fluid gets to lubricate it

Also search into my threads on the same thing. I replaced pump/piston/TC seals… no leaks and a total newby on trans work here.
Lots of advice from Stan and Greg in my threads.

you’re removing the trans and standing it up-right like the shop manual says to do, for the seals/TC replace/reinsert, correct?
