Default Led dash lights...what dimmer do you use?

Converted all interior lights to leds.of course the stock dimmer does ot support leds. For those who have converted over to leds, what do you use/reccomend for a dimmer...?

I purchased Ed Scherer's Protizmo dimmer for my '89S4 when replacing all the dash lights with LEDs.:

I discovered I didn't need it as the lights dimmed as normal with the rheostat under the dash. You may be as fortunate and won't need it. I suspect it will depend on which LEDs you are using.

My original dimmer works too, maybe doesn’t have the same brightness range with LEDs but good enough for me.

This.

You have to have all the lights converted over including those in the HVAC head unit or they'll be dark (like off).

I used this one.....$12, and I've been using them for several years in my 3D studio with no problems.
Amazon Amazon

by pulling the cover off of the switch i was able to mount it almost exactly where the oem dimmer was located.

Default Dimmable LED's are a thing

If you purchase dimmable LED' bulbs for the main pod illumination, you can use the standard rheostat in the car. I have done this for both Digital Dash and the Early Analog Dashes. Here is a video of the dimming function on the digital dash.

In the video, these are the bulbs I used, but there are several other variations that are compatible. I would recommend a color temperature of warm white, since natural white is too harsh on the eyes.

...if you just maintain the pod, you don't need an LED dimmer.

You need one because _they are inappropriate for instrument gauges at night_.

Hi Michael,
I wondered, does the dimming still work in the ***** on the pod? I see your headlight switch is always full on bright. Mine is always dimmed. The fog light ***** are off, until the headlights are on. They are dimmed when not operational and come on full when you turn on the foglights. Same for the rear window heating (dimmed with headlights on, full bright when active). I think this is standard behavior.
(I would have to check, not sure if the rheostat also dims the **** lights together with the instruments and center console, I think it does.)

So the question is, are the ***** still dimmed when the fogs / rear window heating is not active?

Default Pod Switches Behavior

I cannot remember exactly what the behavior is for the pod switches. Maybe someone which incandescent bulbs in there could provide a summary.

I can tell you I replaced the pod switches with LED's and resistors so they have a high/low brightness so you can differentiate when the switch is ON (high) vs OFF (low).
  • The headlight switch is always illuminated in the low setting with the switch off.
  • The hazard, rear defroster, front fog, and rear fog light switches are illuminated in low setting when the headlight switch is in position 1 or 2
I cannot remember if the low setting dims with the LED bulbs or with the incandescent

Thanks.
I've just checked in my car, the **** lights on dimmed setting do change with the rheostat. Their bright setting is unaffected by the dimmer.

So the **** leds are not plug&play? how did you fit the resistor? Just added it in line before the switch connector?

I'm mostly thinking about my hvac sliders, as there are the poorest lit items in the car. Do you have a dimmable led in there?

The Protizmo store is currently out of stock. Interested in parting with yours for what you have in it?

I can't vouch for this product but it is very compact and with thumbwheel replicating the original rheostat wheel, could easily be made to work in the original location.

Small PWM dimmer control. Small PWM dimmer control.
