I recently dropped off my 1979 ROW manual car at my mechanic for a timing, water pump, reseal, and also a clutch job with everything replaced. Parts were procured from a highly trusted retailer in our hobby. One of the items was a resurfaced intermediate Plate. My mechanic is a telling me that the new intermediate will not mate properly and does not work. He tells me that the one that was in the car mounts up just fine. He has sent me a photo of the flex plates side by side. My old intermediate has a slightly different casting, with notches or square areas machined into it. Also, the old plate appears to have a smaller surface area.

I am wondering if anyone can lend me some insight into why there may be a difference between the two plates. What that difference means in this application.

I am posting here to see if I can expedite an answer and get my car out of the shop. My parts man is looking into this issue for me, and I am sure he will get to the bottom of it, however, I also realize I am not the only person or crisis he has to deal with in a day.

The 78-79 clutches are unique, last time I checked (couple years ago) the 78-79 intermediate discs were not available new anymore. This is why I converted the clutch in my 79 to 85/86 spec which is the final iteration of the double disc clutch.

What symptoms were you trying to correct with the clutch job?

BTW, I meant "intermediate plate" throughout this whole post. Not Flex. I am getting old timer's disease at age 54.

My symptoms were a shudder upon releasing the clutch pedal. The clutch release in reverse sounded like two cinder blocks slapping together. It was noisy and vibrated as I rolled away from the stop light. I opted to do a resurfaced intermediate as a "while you are in there". Along with clutch discs, pressure plate, pilot bearing, release bearing and the guide.

To be fair, the 85/86 intermediate plates are NLA now, too.

As I said in my email Chris we sent the incorrect 80+ Intermediate plate.
When you send it back I will refund you in full - sorry for the trouble.

Good thing Hans is making a new clutch assembly (with a billet torque arm) that should be universal with more parts going NLA.
