Had my 928 in storage at a local facility here in Vegas. This facility had a huge fire at the end of august. It is currently a crime scene and the FD isnt allowing anyone access to the area. I can only assume the state of my car based on the footage and still images i have seen coming over news feeds and SM etc etc. My unit was ground floor on the south side of the building. The fire was apparently on the second floor and was extremely wide spread and the FD said all units were affected. They cut locks and opened all of them to check for fire spread etc etc.
My hope is that the concrete ceiling (floor of the 2nd floor) did its job as a fire break and the fire and heat never made it to the lower units. The Storage company isn't telling anyone the extent of the damage or what units are affected. We have all been in limbo the last 2 weeks. Its killing me.
I am cautiously optimistic.
you guys get it. 24 years with this car...time..energy..resources and a tremendous amount of sentimental value for me. I really don't view it as my car any more but rather my kids. I really don't want my years of ownership to end this way.

On the positive side in the process industries we often use concrete to fireproof steel structures and thus prevent structural collapse due to heat when the flames impinge directly. If the building has a monolithic floor slab and the fire was on the floor above where your car was stored I would think there is a reasonable chance for some degree of survival providing the first floor structure did not collapse.
This would drive me bug-s**t crazy. Kudos to you for keeping your patience and not stooping to bribing the neighbors to hop their fence and take a peak...
Radiative heat drops off as the cube (maybe just the square? Either way, it's fast) of distance so, hopefully, in addition to the break above from the concrete, the air gap above the car also helped.

When Adam and I had our shop (other location) the neighboring unit right next door had a fire (lost a big dollar 60's Vette). We had some smoke in our unit and over time I guess the foam or whatever they used to put out the fire created a sort of acidic vapor that covered stuff in our unit (walls were metal and not totally sealed at the edges or roof). All exposed metal developed a light rust coating, so check for that once you get a chance and perhaps get it out and do a thorough hose down and cleaning.
Damn man, that's just nerv-wrecking..
I really hope your car has survived. I have only had my car about two years and it is already "my precious"... To have a car that long, must be like a family member as you say...
I hope you will be able to get to your car soon.

I'm no "fire expert" but I wonder how fire spreads like that through a mostly steel and concrete structure...ventilation system? Electrical bus? It looks like there was actual significant fire damage (through the roof) in some of the units on the back side of the building from you, maybe the fire migrated down that side.
The term "all units affected" would include those with smoke damage only as well.
Best of luck! As one comment said, the heat drops off at a given rate. Plus heat (and smoke) rises. Hope water damage is stopped by the car over.

At first I read your post as the senior investigating officer hasn't released the scene, but now I'm wondering if the FD is holding it up due to safety and not wanting a bunch of people in the building (possible structure compromise). If that's the case, I can only imagine how long that sh*t show could drag on. Just curious, have you contacted your insurance company to hear what they say? Based on previous cases, maybe they could give you some time management expectations. Just a thought...
