New 928 owner -- seeking advice for drive from California to Canada

That should be a great drive! If the weather is good, my choice would be to cross the border in central WA and drive through Banff. The drive from Cali to BC offers many great options. Alternatively, you could pick routes south to avoid being in the mountains with snow if storms are in the forecast.
Regarding California sales tax, I believe the law requires a buyer to pay Cali sales tax if they take possession of the vehicle in Cali (this was the case before I escaped Cali a couple years ago). My advice would be to see if the seller will let you keep the Cali plates on the car (standard in Cali anyways as plates go with the car). Provided the registration is current you’d be able to legally drive the car (without any trip permit which you wouldn’t want to announce to the DMV). Just make sure you have insurance on it as the seller will no longer be liable.

I may have found the answer -- California DMV offer what's referred to as a "one-trip permit" as follows:
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicl...ating-permits/
"In lieu of California registration, you can get a one trip permit (for a fee) to move a vehicle, when unladen, for one continuous trip from a place within California to a place in or outside California or from outside California to a place in California (by the most direct route)."
I'd have to argue that traveling via Greg's shop in Orange was an essential part of the trip (for safety reasons of course), other than that I think I'd be covered.
Does anybody have direct experience of this one-trip permit deal?

95% of the time, the DMV doesn't even date these "trip tickets", especially if you don't know exactly when the trip will occur.
Be vague, humble, and dumb.
The CHP seems to have more to do that mess with expired registration stuff.
Just don't park it at LAX....they will tow it to a impound yard.
BTW: Your 1983 should have gobs of room for a set of modern, plastic snow chains.

Just a thought to get the ride height adjusted as it is sitting super low… you do not want to be a vacuum cleaner for the journey with the additional potential to damage.

I've been really happy with these, they install/remove -very- fast, and are low profile.

I put a brand new set of Blizzacks on my 928 in anticipation of snow,
and they didnt disappoint,
with all 4 wheels having traction it was easy to drive in the snow it was 3 inches deep .
I had to try to break the rear wheels loose or lock the fronts under braking.
Drive easy you should be good to go.

I agree, I have these tires too. But we get more cement snow, than much easier to manage drier snow.

FWIW, road deicer is already being used in Washington. This stuff is murder on aluminum. I'd consider shipping the car if it's nice and you want it to remain that way. Even if there's no snow on the ground, the deicer gets applied regularly until spring.

Hello All. We had our first snow overnight on Sunday, and okay, it melted quite quickly yesterday, but as of this morning I made the decision to have her shipped rather than being temped to make the drive. Nevertheless, I will collect her in San Fran and leave her in LA for shipping, so I'll still get a decent drive in along Highway 1. Thanks to all of you for chiming in with helpful tips and advice ... online communities such as Rennlist are absolutely invaluable.
I'll post some pics along the way ... does it get any better than an inaugural drive along the Pacific Coast Highway ...

Same here. Never an issue, keep the speed reasonable, don't draw attention. Properly insured of course.

Where in Ontario are you? There are a bunch of us in the GTA.
Congrats on the purchase and good call on shipping it back.
