So, my 88 has adjustable shift forks held in place (#5 below on the left.)

As Greg mentioned on another thread these forks are pretty robust and rarely move unless driven by Mongo. :-)

I cannot say enough nice things about Greg's recommended differential fluid.

It has transformed how my transmission shifts. Hard to put it into words, it shifts better. All shifts.

I'm giving away all my Mobil1.

Yes, the 4th and 5th (as well as the 2nd/3rd) shift forks are adjustable.
They are located on a radial splined section of the shift rod and do not seem to move very often.
I believe that Mark Kibort had one that moved.
He simply removed the top cover, loosened the bolt, centered the shift sleeve over the inner shift hub, and retorqued the bolt.
Certain worth taking a peek, before shipping it all the way out to California, especially if the synchros are happier, now.

Sorry, hope you didn't have a bunch of Mobil One.....although it works adequately in the "pre-Borg Warner" style transmissions (1984 and earlier.)

There's an amazing, very long story, to our search for the "best" gear oil.
Notice that I had you try the Sta Lube first. Primarily because I knew it would be an improvement and it was fairly easy to find.
However, because of one client's collection of late model 928's with manual transmissions, we knew the "search" had to continue.
All of his manual 928's shifted so incredibly well, that we were (quite literally), afraid to change the gear oil, in his cars.

The search continued and we found (through another client's effort) a "not very common" gear oil which is even better than the Sta Lube.
How much better?
Mary no longer has to search the Internet to get Sta Lube shipped to California....I don't believe we have any of it, remaining in inventory.

However, Sta Lube works fine and is a great improvement over most everything else.
And yeah, what we now use is a "state secret". (Which someone will think is unfair.)
But sorry, I can't tell everyone everything I know or have learned, after spending time and money to figure it out.

Hard to imagine there's a better alternative.

It's even harder to imagine that he would share valid information with the forum. He'd rather beat his chest even more (if that's even possible) that he alone knows the secret of this off the shelf "magic" juice. Yet another useless post brought to you by the infamous GB. SMH

I know...that's why I had you start here, with the "cheap fluid".
The next step is like buying bottles of Buffalo Trace.

Greg, these are the types of posts that create conflict!

In the future it would be better if you just recommended the Sta Lube if that's adequate and didn't even mention that there is a better super secret sauce in your response if you're not going to inform the forum what it is.

It's like when you say you've developed 30-40 928 specific products and the members here probably know about 5 or 6 of them - that's not a constructive post unless you're then going to tell us what the other 35 products are and then make them available.

If you want to keep this info and these producta private to protect you're intellectual property and the time and cost you invested to develop them, I understand that, but then don't mention them in the public forum!

Honestly, I don't have a problem with that. And you would be better served to offer that advice as a PM.

And I really don't my thread to go sideways because some people have a hard time with Greg idiosyncrasies no, eccentricities.

I am over the moon with how my wrecked 88 shifts now. I personally like the cat and mouse nature of this thread.

Ok?

OK.

i actually made the post to let people know that Sta Lube isn't the necessary end all" gear oil, that not only do I have an alternative, but there may be others, which people know about.

I DIDN'T WANT IT TO APPEAR LIKE A KNOW IT ALL AND HAVE THE ONLY SOLUTION!

It's getting virtually impossible, for me to say anything, without being trashed....yet I don't see this continuous snarky **** being directed towards other people.

Fvck it.
I'm over this ****.
The trolls win, for now.
I'll quit helping and only do promotional stuff.
Rennlist will be much better place, I'm sure.

Don't go!

I hesitate to put this in print but, the fifth gear pop out may be going away, too.

It's been a couple of weeks and it only happened once - today. Used to be a daily occurrence.

The more I drive it the better it shifts.

Kevin, please post summary of your solution. Having a similar issue with an 84.
Thanks, Jason

Yessir, that is the car my friend.

I think I asked Mike to put the 4 cans of oil in the trunk with the clutch parts sent by Porsche. I do have that crunch @ 3/4 so hope something resolves it… specially after getting the GB engine touch
