1979 928 five speed - does the TT need to be removed to install a clutch?
To put a new clutch in does the TT have to come out like the 944?

Hi Dan,
Nope!
The 928 has a two part drive shaft so you can drop the clutch assembly without dropping the TT, transmission and rear suspension from the 928.
Cheers.

An experienced 928 tech can do one in a couple of hours, assuming the 928 doesn't have headers and everything comes out / goes back in without issues. The first time I serviced a 928 clutch I dropped it on my head, don't do that.
If you are this new to 928's, it might not hurt to share what symptoms you have and what all parts you are planning to replace. Could save you a lot of headaches before you tear into it. The 78's and 79's have a different style of the double disc clutch than later years, assuming it's all original, you may want to consider upgrading to the latest variation which includes swapping upper bellhousings.

Also depending on how old the bell housing is,
the release arm may have to be replaced as the early arm with the pin pivot ,
wont fit on the later style ball and bushing version
this means the TOB and guide tube and the release arm all must be changed.
Its also wise to replace the fluid line to the long flex hose version for ease of bleeding

928 has the best clutch replacement design of any car I've ever seen.

From memory, it took me 1hr from the car entering the paddock at Spa to the car being lowered off the axle stands with a new twin-disc clutch in situ... A great design by Porsche!
