'87 S4 : power steering pump only whines when cold
I had an earlier post about that few weeks a go :
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...p-whining.html
I did everything the guys suggested me, now it only whines when cold, as soon as it picks up some heat it will stop whining, I have read somewhere here that maybe I would try another ATF but to be honest I can't find it logical! .. ATFs should be extremely similar brand to brand. Its really embarrassing driving my car around with that whine. I have rebuilt rack and pump, replaced all the rubber hoses and new reservoir. Where do you think I should start?

Whining when cold is still caused by air ingestion into the pump from the reservoir. Have you checked for foam when cold and someone else turns the steering wheel?
ATF is not all the same. My tranny doesn't like synthetic ATF at all, tried it and it sucked. ATF Dexron II mineral based and never had any shifting or slipping issues. Same with the power steering.
If the pump is the only thing left without a rebuilt, it might be worth a try. However, before I would consider a rebuilt, I would try Liqui Moly ATF treatment.

Assuming the level is OK, you could also try a whole different kind of fluid. I moved to CHF202/11S from the standard red stuff that is common here, at the requirement of the rebuilder of my steering rack. So far, so good. This is the same fluid that is required on my daily driver BMW, so it's not a totally crazy application.
Good luck

So guys, after 1 hour drive and spending $50 just for two litres of CHF 11S fluid (the green stuff), I drained the old ATF as much as I can by removing the two banjo fittings at the rack and put in a litre of the CHF, drained it again to remove as much ATF as possible, put in new crush washers and re tighten the banjos, put in a litre, swinged the steering lift to right a few times, all good and steering is now silent. what a relief! .. It seems the liqui moly 1200 ATF is not compatible with our cars for some reason, although I use in my trans and it seems to work well there. The real test now is to check tomorrow when cold started.

That's a huge bummer to hear.
Have you ever rebuilt the pump? If the crush washers are new and working as they should, I wonder if you're getting a leak internally on the pump. The good news is that the rebuild kits are pretty cheap, and the rebuild is straightforward. You can maybe find a way to save some of that new, expensive fluid. If you can catch it during draining the system, I have used coffee filters effectively to make sure that fluids are in good condition for reuse, so there wouldn't be any need to waste what you just added.
Cheers

May I suggest one of these Lucas Oil products:
- Power Steering Fluid
- Power Steering Fluid With Conditioners
- Power steering Fluid Stop Leak
I have an '87, and have used the "with conditioners" and it has quieted my pump.
Worst case scenario - it is cheaper than a rebuild.
