Default Clicking noise from near the transmission

Hey all,
just got my car finally. I had it towed from NJ from the seller. I turned on the car and hear this weird clicking from near the rear transmission. It is a 1983 928s manual.

the clicking sound goes away when you hold down the clutch as seen towards the end of the video. Do you think it may be related to transmission cable? It feels like some gear is partially engaging when in neutral.

Please see attached video.

here are my symptoms,
1. There is a knocking sound when the car is in neutral and the clutch is not pressed. The sound comes from the rear of the car near the transmission.
2. As soon as you press the clutch, the sound completely goes away.
3. When you put it into first gear, which is pretty hard, the sound goes away for a few seconds but comes back soon
4. The sound is also there to a lower extent in second gear
5. There is no sound in third gear at all and it drives very well.

That's your torque tube bearings. When the clutch is out, the torque tube is spinning. When you press the pedal, it slows and stops so the noise goes away.

Oh man - this is a big job rt? The torque tube has to come off for this? Can this be done with jack stands? Or do I need a lift?

If it’s the torque tube bearings it should make noise on all the gears rt? I only hear it in first gear and neutral.

I'm sure people have done it on jackstands, but a lift helps. I've not done it myself, but one of my 928s.needs it. Unfortunately, it's the one with the Z06 6-speed in it and because of the length I can't just drop the torque tube and am going to have to drop the whole rear subframe and suspension.

The 928 clutch is easy to remove and yours should come out.once the clutch is removed.

Constantine's Bearings from Black Sea Racing are the ones to use.

When the shaft is unloaded is when it can have the most play so in neutral when there aren't other car and road noises is when it is the most noticeable.

Thanks. So this seems like a common thing on these cars and a maintenance item. I was so pissed this started the second I bought the car ☹️

Can transporting the car on a flat bed for 3 hours impact the torque tube bearing?

No, not unless sometime tied the car down using the torque tube, but even then, I doubt it. The spinning part is suspended on bearings inside the outer tube and it's very strong and solidly attached at both ends.

just took it out for a drive, the sound is so much worse in first gear than neutral and hardly there in all of the other gears.

Also found a power steering leak. I did a terrible job with due diligence. ☹️

Be very careful with power steering leaks - that fluid is flammable and if it's coming from the high pressure hose side, can spray all over the exhaust manifold and start a fire. Looks like yours might be coming from the steering rack - see if that rack boot is full of fluid.

Howard Wright at European Classics in Atlanta is the steering rack rebuild guy but some of our other vendors like 928sRus might have rebuilt racks available where they'll charge you a core that you'll get back when you return yours.

NOTE it would be wise take the car to a 928 mechanic to have the sound diagnosed,
you might have early indications that the transmission needs to be rebuilt in addition to the TT.
Also you could have a failing throw out bearing in your clutch.
The rack is leaking so figure you need a,
rebuilt rack,
and boots ,
and tierod ends,
and the hi pressure line,
and tank,
and supply hose.

thanks - the seller mentioned the transmission was rebuilt recently. Really hope it nots a trans issue as I paid extra for this 😀

here is an audio clip of the car driving.

the sounds in neutral is likely the torque bearing, but first gear seems pretty horrible, which isn’t there in second and higher gears. Please let me know what you think.

I will try and find a 928 mechanic near Maryland.

the seller mentioned this could be the transmission shift linkage cup. Could this be the case?

That clack clack clack in first gear does not sound like torque tube bearings. They're really only noisy when unloaded.

I think you're going to need to take it to a shop and have it gone through.
