Sump Pan Gasket
84 S2 Euro
I have my engine out for a bit of a refresh and just wondering what the consensus is for sump gasket as in silicon or cork selection.
Also I have a crank end play of 0.25mm and wondering if I should replace the thrust bearing while I’m there probably with the later type. I know it’s within limits but not sure what it would have been when it left the factory

The gasket you want is the new green one. More durable than cork and not as squishy as the silicone. Greg Brown at Precision Motorwerks sells it and I think Roger at 928sRus has a version too.

Regarding the Thrust bearing some questions ,
Do you have a 5 speed or a auto?
how many miles?
what do the rod bearings look like?
what is the projected use-age for the car?

the car will have an easy life, no track sessions and mostly old man driving with the occasional spirited drive

My 84 Euros have the spacers (washers) and the circlip at the front end of the torque tube to reduce/prevent Thrust bearing failure. Since your engine has been changed, you might want to check that your torque tube still has those installed.

NOTE John I would suggest that you check the thrust clearance regardless of the these circlips,
and also retorque the rear pinch bolt.
OP is the engine you got from a 5 speed or an auto? thats now being used in an auto?
I would say it might be prudent to split the girdle and swap in a new thrust bearing and leave the others alone.
Dont polish the crank. unless your prepared to do the following.
NOTE ideally you would drill out the sludge trap plugs and retap threads for screw in plugs,
then clean out all the dirt in the crank throws.
NOTE nominal new clearance is .006 in.
The usual wear for an auto is .008 in. to .010 in. .016 in. is max
and also retorque the rear pinch bolt.

As noted above you want the green silicon one, not the orange silicon, and not the cork. Roger and Greg both have the green silicon. Six months ago or so I bought both Roger's and Greg's part and Greg's was quite a bit better in terms of the fit and hole locations. I'm not sure if you can buy it, though. Greg is an excellent mechanic and inventor, but not such a great parts distributor. And prone to feuding with the folks who actually are good parts distributors.
