Transmission lost reverse today
#16
This vintage of automatic transmissions wears out reverse first. The debris from reverse piston and clutches goes through the transmission like a spoon in a garbage disposal. Precision Motorwerks still has brand new transmissions (with limited slip) or offers a rebuilt exchange.

hanks for all the replies. I had a lengthy and enlightening conversation with Greg today. I have decided to save money to buy a rebuilt transmission from precision motor works. I may miss this season of driving Vendalla but in the end it will give me time to rebuild the torque tube with some super bearings and get a solid transmission in her. This is a journey and I would like to take my time and build one sweet 928!

I didn't want to write it before (and bum you out) but everything you described was what happened to me a couple years ago. I was hoping for the best and that maybe yours was something simple. Anyway, I was getting ready for the South Dakota event and took the car for one last 30-min "shake down" ride before leaving in a couple days. Pulled it into the garage when I got home and no issues. Later, tried to move the car and it wouldn't go in reverse, but it would go forward. After ruling out all the simple stuff I dropped the pan to see how the fluid looked and sure enough - I found what looked like chewed-up paper clips (the dime is for scale). I called Greg, packed it up, and sent it off. Needless to say, it was a train wreck – but Greg did his magic and returned it to its awesomeness.
Constantine did the TT - powder coated it, new shaft etc. He, and others, would probably tell you to replace the shaft as the splines are prone to sheering off.
I'd encourage you that while you're waiting for the tranny rebuild, take the time and make everything lickable clean
