Default Tow Hitches (again...)

If I recall, there are a small handful of 928s here that have the factory tow hitch. Would you mind measuring the height from the ground to the top of the ball? I've got a line on a NOS factory hitch (at an obscene price), but our tiny teardrop trailer (2000#) hitch needs to be 21" for a level load. Don't want to spend that kind of cash and find out it's 5" too low.

Mine is currently not installed as i removed it from my 85 after the accident and haven't gotten around to installing it on the 86.5, so I can't get you an exact height, but should be able to get you a fairly accurate guess. the ball mounts should reside with minimal clearance to the lower valance, so I can hold it in the approximate location and then measure the ball height. do you want it to the top of the ball or the center...?

Also I am assuming it includes the ball mount? if not you may have an extremely difficult time locating a mount that will interface with the factory hitch. As far as I know the ***** were only ever available in 50mm, which conveniently is close enough to a 2" for us to use, but if your trailer uses anything different like 1-7/8, you will have to mod the trailer to 2" to use it.

Top, please. And luckily it does use a 2", so that will be close enough.

I have a Porsche installed tow hitch that came with my '93 GTS. It's currently sitting in my storage unit. It's missing the tongue. I wish I knew somebody could build me a tongue.

My best guess is the top of the ball would sit between 15 and 16 inches from the ground.

Never seen one of these. Are they they European looking curvy thing that comes up to the ball on the top or a normal 1 1/2" or 2" type receivers that are common over here? If the latter, you can adjust the height with a drop or lift hitch in the receiver. If the European type, they seem to be fixed height so probably that type.

Kevin, you kind of know me, and I'll bet I could make you a tongue. Send me a picture of the receptacle on the hitch and a sketch of the tongue you want and then we can get some measurements and get at it..

This image of the hitch kit came out of the big RL towing equipment thread, https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...h-tow-bar.html

Yep, that's what I was thinking it was going to look like from seeing hitches like that on The Grand Tour.

Thanks!

I've thought about making a different adaptor for mine as well as having the stock ball mount, with the primary motivation of being able to mount my 1up bike rack. Haven't decided if I want to make a new mount plate for the rack itself or an adaptor that would incorporate a standard 1-1/4 square receiver. Probably depends on how far aft i need to move the rack for pedal to bumper clearance. in reality it's somewhat low priority until I've actually mounted the hitch onto the 86.5.

If you need any detailed pictures or dimensions just let me know, mine is fairly accessible upstairs in storage above the garage at the moment.

Thanks for posting these. I'd forgotten that the GTS hitch was a completely different design that the earlier Porsche hitch.

@hwyengr Which style do you have available to you?

I am working on a kind of redesign of what I assume is the "tongue." It appears to me to be item 16 in the drawings shown above. With my design I will be able to fashion it so that it will place the ball at just about any height above the ground that is needed or desired. If so, I could also make one for Jeremy to accommodate his 21 inch need.

P.S. It looks like the tongues are going to be quite a bit different, but I am sure that I can make either one in my own redesign.

No pictures yet, but it has the same part number as the early hitch 928 722 031 02.

They know what they've got, though. $3000 is the ask. Between that and the crate transmission I got from Porsche last year, that's about what this car cost 10 years ago...

I might suffer the 2nd most from completionism around here, just behind Rob.
